    Hi Don,

When installing any program, where you have problems, use the clean
    install method.

    Clean Install:

First, using Explore, manually delete all files and sub-folders of your
\Temp Folders. You need to view Hidden Files and folders.

When done, run Disk Cleanup. Schedule a Chkdsk to run at boot. Both
options, desired but normally the first option checked.

Now use msconfig. Dot Selective Startup. Uncheck Load Startup Items.
Click Services. Hide All Microsoft Services then click Disable All. Click
Apply then OK. Restart the Computer.

When done Chkdsk, computer reboots and then go back to msconfig. Dot
Normal Startup. Click Apply then OK. Exit without a restart. Now install
Windows Live Messenger. Reboot the computer.

I'm having a similar problem. I followed these steps, but still the problem
    persists.

When I try installing Messenger and Sign-in Assistant it gets up to the
point where it checks my computer and a minute later it stops and tells me
both were not installed. I get an option to try again later.

There links to get help with this, but both point to pages telling my to use
    less terms when searching. (link:

    Hi Dex,

See if it needs the newest version of Windows Messenger to be installed
    in XP operating systems.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Install the newest version of Windows Messenger, reboot and then attempt
    to install Windows Live Messenger.
