Then, open your web browser and sign into your email account via the webmail interface at www.hotmail.com. Click on contacts and make the necessary adjustments to individual contacts and/or groups. Save your changes and sign out from the webmail interface. Restart Windows Live Messenger and sign in again. This time, WLMessenger should synchronize all contact details (including groups) with the relevant email account. |

| | Re: Contacts added to new group don't persist Ah, so clicking the mail icon while in Messenger doesn't actually sign me into the actual hotmail web site using my unique ID? If my ID is unique, why am I not re-directed to the sight your pointed me to, my credentials verified and POOF! I'm where I should be? I'm where I should be? > It is important to remember that the definitive "Live Contacts" list is maintained on a Microsoft server - as opposed to the hard drive of your local computer. When you boot your computer and start Windows Live Messenger, WLMessenger will automatically download your contact details from the central database. In theory, it should also synchronize subsequent changes automatically, if you change any contact details in WLMessenger. However, upward synchronization does not always seem to work properly. Similarly, Windows Live Mail is configured by default to sign in, using the user's Live identity. Then, WLMail synchronizes the user's contact details with the central database. Although WLMail is a different program from WLMessenger, it depends upon the same, central database. I cannot provide a precise explanation for the problem you experienced. However, I suspect that upward synchronization from Windows Live Messenger on your local computer does not work reliably. Alternatively, synchronization via the WLMessenger program might be delayed - and could be "lost", if you sign out from WLMessenger before synchronization with the Microsoft server has occurred. In my experience, the most reliable way to edit contacts on the central database is via the webmail interface. Furthermore, I recommend closing all other "Live" utilities before you perform the edit, to prevent potential conflicts if there are different local versions of the contacts list. |
