Having a "Senior Moment" here

I seem to have forgotten how to prevent someone from starting my webcam. I have one contact who does that and it drives me crazy that he starts my webcam without me knowing it. Isn't there a way to hide my webcam from him?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Having a "Senior Moment" here

Hi Larry,

There is no feature in Messenger that automatically accepts any requests (webcam, filter transfer, etc.), you have to Accept each any every invite. Although there is feature to turn off the indicator that you have a webcam, that won't prevent them from sending the request.

What I suspect has happened is that you've installed Messenger Plus Live and have turned on the auto-accept feature. You can turn this off by opening up the main contact list window, pressing the Alt key on the keyboard to open the menu bar, choose Plus!, then Preferences, choose the Conversations tab and uncheck the Auto accept feature at the bottom (or customize it to include file transfers only, or filter out specific contacts that are causing you grief).

Re: Having a "Senior Moment" here

Jonathan, thanks for the reply, but I don't have Plus installed. My contact can start my webcam without my knowledge and he does it because he comments on things happening in the background. Yet I don't see his webcam icon in the message box. So apparently he can start my webcam and I don't get any notification of it happening. I've turned off the "Allow others to see I have a webcam" option and I hope that works, but I thought there was a way to stop someone from starting my webcam. If you hover over someone's webcam the popup states that you can either start/stop their webcam.

Re: Having a "Senior Moment" here

I put controlling webcam from other pc maliciously into a google search.
Scarily this was the first result.

http://cyberinsecure.com/pc-webcams-...-spy-on-users/

I think I'd be switching off the webcam for now.

Things to consider:-

Is it wind-up? Does he know whats in your room from a visit and is making
educated guesses (like those stage show clairvoyants)?

Has he ever been in your house, had access to the computer, or been invited
to do remote assistance? Have you downloaded/installed anything from him?

Is this person a trusted friend with warped sense of humour? If not and you
are convinced they have access some how then I'd be contacting the police at
this point as it sounds like stalking.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/

Someone here may be able to help you find out if your pc is compromised.
You'd need to create an account (free - just posting name and email
address - no finance or anything like that) to be able to participate in the
forums. All the info is easy to follow.

Re: Having a "Senior Moment" here

Hi,

Clickjacking only affects websites and flash, it won't affect Messenger.

I'm with Spikey though, if the webcam really is on, it's probably some other application
that's sending it -- not Messenger. As a workaround, tape a piece of paper around that
webcam for privacy or unplug it all together.

Re: Having a "Senior Moment" here

Thanks spikey. No, I'm definitely not paranoid. The person who did this has never been to my home. Unfortunately he is an ex-con and his brother is a systems administrator, so I'm assuming he's learning a lot from his brother, if you know what I mean. Anyway, how I discovered he had started my webcam was that there is a lounge chair in view and there was a person sitting in it and he asked me who's feet those were in the chair. First though, he asked me if my camera worked, and when I told him yes and asked him if he had a webcam, he said no but his brother did and of course I didn't see the webcam icon next to his avatar. Anyway, I turned that option off so he can no longer see the webcam to start it. But if he started it before without me knowing it, he probably can do it again. I guess the best thing would be to just block him.

Re: Having a "Senior Moment" here

Thanks Jonathan, I have a little shield on the webcam that I can put over the lens. I completely forgot about that. I can just keep it covered and IF he can start it without me knowing, at least he won't be able to see me, but he can still hear me. What a hassle.

Anyway, thanks to all who made suggestions or tried to help. I appreciate your efforts.

Hi,

When i read it, it comes in my mind that there might be another program running to control your pc,
or to vieuw your desktop. And ofcouse, on a webcam should be "funny".

Maybe have a look under the settings, software, and figure out if there is any remote application installed,
like remote administrator, pc anywhere or something like that.

Good luck with it!
