It does work on x64, there's known "known issue" or anything here.
Although you're not the first to experience these problems (regardless of platform). There
should be a new version of Messenger this week or next, so maybe it's best to hold off until
then.
However, what is your problem downgrading? If you're having serious problems, run
ZapMessenger in the link below to remove Messenger:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/zapmessenger.asp
And then install 8.5 again:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/wlm85.asp
