Are you trying to change the Internet Explorer application icon on the
desktop with the msn gateway or Windows Live "Today" as your home page?

Instead Try:

Creating a new "Favorite" in Internet Explorer. It doesn't matter at
this point what page the "favorite" points to.

Open the "Favorites" pane and right click the new "favorite" you just
created.

On the "general" tab edit the field next to the icon to "Windows Live
Hotmail"

On the "Web Document" tab edit the URL field to contain http://mail.live.com

Right drag the icon to your desktop. Click to "copy" the favorite.

the desktop it reverted back to the original icon

every
fibre of my being but its becoming all consuming and time to move on and
accept it.

Let's take a closer look at what's happening before giving up.

First, don't worry about the icon that appears when you release the
dragged icon onto the desktop. We're going to try changing it later.

Also make sure you're working from Internet Explorer and not that
alternate "MSN Explorer" browser that's installed by some versions of
the MSN installation media. If your system has been configured to use
the MSN Explorer application as the default web browser it might alter
its behavior in ways I won't be able to assist you with, as I used msn
via dial up for years without installing or using the MSN Explorer
application.

Some procedures create a "Favorite" shortcut with two tabs ("General"
and "Web Document" on the "Properties" pop-up. Other procedures produce
a shortcut with three tabs ("General" "Shortcut" and "Compatibility").
On my windows XP Home SP2 system dragging a bookmark from Firefox
produces the three tab version, but dragging a favorite from the
Internet Express v7 "Favorites" pane produces the two tab version.
Please indicate which version of the properties pop-up you get when
dragging the favorite from your Internet Explorer Favorites pane. Right
click the icon to display its context menu with the option to display
the properties pop-up.

Edit the URL field before attempting to change the favorite's icon.
Don't worry if about any other information that WAS in the field. Edit
it down to http://mail.live.com/ ONLY.

The two tab version should have a lonely "Change Icon..." button (the
only button on the "Web Document" tab). Using that button I was able to
change the favorite's icon from the original icon resembling the "start"
button "Windows" symbol (by itself) to another icon (I chose a variant
with a globe behind a smaller version of the Windows symbol). I've used
the favorite a couple of times and it still uses the new icon. I even
changed my default browser so the icon would open Internet Explorer
instead of Firefox, still managed to access "Windows Live Hotmail"
multiple times without the desktop favorite's icon changing from MY choice.

The behavior of shortcuts created though MSN Explorer, any MSN or
Hotmail shortcuts created through installing the Windows XP operating
system (with MSN internet service selected as an option) and the
Internet Explorer shortcut (the blue lower case "e") that appears on the
"start" button and/or desktop as a consequence of the Windows XP
installation MIGHT produce different properties pop-ups with different
behavior. Those other shortcuts might have different icon properties as
well.

I only have the 2 option property menu and I am using Internet Explorer not
MSN
Is there anyway that you could possibly take me thru this whole thing
step-by-step
when you have time? I got kind of confused in the dragging part of these
instructions but I am a pretty smart lady and its very late in Ontario Canada
right now and if I could email you or vice versa and we could do this together
it would be an absolute godsend because out of the whole Microsoft environment
you are the only person who seems to get what I am trying to do
and I know it seems so trivial but to me its become an obsession.
Anyway if you have the time and inclination I would gladly try to do
everything
you said but I am a bit flustered and need extra instruction, sorry
