| | WL9: Sharing Folders vs Skydrive It seems that you are dropping the sharing folders for a new model. I never used sharing folders as they were usually too slow and had no feedback whatsoever on the file transfer. When I want to send a file to someone, I want that my recipient have the file as soon as possible. So, because Shared Folders didn't work like this for me, I continued to use the normal send file. Its not perfect, but at least I can see the file going and know it the other party received it! Now, it seems that Sharing folders are going to be replaced with SkyDrive. That is OK with me. Personally I'm a dropbox fan so I was looking for some of the features of dropbox with the added functionality of Sharing Folders. Instead, I found less features, with a very bad integration. The conversation window has an option for Files with a menu: Publish Files Online and Send a File of Photo. The second, is the old send file (good!). The first is a shortcut to the skydrive. The problem is, although it allows me share the folder with the contact (after going a few menus) it does not provide automatic notifications to the other user (and I have to send a special link with the folder address). So, skyfire is not a direct replacement of Sharing Folders as it is not directly connected with messenger. There is only a link to it. Also, SkyFire limits files to 50M each, which is a big limit for today standard. Therefore I ask: What is the road map for messenger file sharing (that is not only photos, but also music, albums, code, pictures, documents, presentations...). |

| | RE: WL9: Sharing Folders vs Skydrive after a bit of more using, an update: It seems that if either party adds a file to the shared folder, a "warning" appears on top of the conversation window (just under the name and message). But this i still buggy: It only appears after login into messenger. So if during a conversation the file is added it does not show. The message "Added files to <folder>" also shows how long ago it was (10 minutes ago). This time does not refresh, so it would be more useful if it showed the local time instead of always showing 10 minutes ago. | | Re: WL9: Sharing Folders vs Skydrive A long while it seems.. I left the window open all night and it still shows "10 minutes ago". The other party is offine atm, I wonder if it will refresh when she sign in, or it will only refresh when I sign in again. | | Re: WL9: Sharing Folders vs Skydrive I've been using dropbox and I'm pretty happy with it! The purpose of my "concern" here is the integration with Messenger. Simple drag and drop, immediate transfer, and windows notifications are a must. | | Re: WL9: Sharing Folders vs Skydrive As said above, you can use Windows Live Sync (http://sync.live.com), it's like use a p2p trought the web, you just need to install the client (available for Mac too), add some folders, tell your friend that install the client, sync the folder, and you'll be able to share files with your friend(s). PD: It doesn't have the 50Mb SkyDrive limit. ![]() |
