I tried downgrading as suggested above, and it worked. Just uninstalled WLM2009, Googled the WLM2008 install and ran it, and was up and running. This is a WLM2009 bug.

Re: WLM 9 - Video kaput 'We are unable to run audio & video setup' mes

I tried uninstalling Windows Live 2009 and reinstall Windows Live 2008, everything works fine. Just curious, I reinstall Windows Live 2009, same thing. Cannot run the audio and video setup. Something is definately wrong with Windows Live 2009.

It's not the webcam as my other pc which does not have any webcam can run the audio and video setup.

PS: I wonder why Microsoft always would not admit that something is wrong with their software and returns the blame on user. This include the annoying problem in Windows Live for Windows Mobile where it will automatic dial-up to internet even though the device is already connected to internet via Wifi.

Re: WLM 9 - Video kaput 'We are unable to run audio & video setup' mes

I forgot to mention that. When I tried to uninstall Windows Live Messenger, or anything that might be Microsoft ??? Messenger, I found that it did not exist under Add/Remove Programs. To make things worse, there were two or three items starting with Windows Live. One sounded like a package or application, as opposed to setup utility or drivers, so I uninstalled it and that did the trick.

Re: WLM 9 - Video kaput 'We are unable to run audio & video setup'

I think the problem is not with the webcam but with the audio. When I tried
to start a voice call, it reports that there is no audio device. But of
course, the audio driver is installed correctly.

For my laptop, it's SigmaTel chipset audio device.

I don't think the problem is either, it is WLM2009. In every case, it has been cannot setup video & audio, sometimes along with other errors like "cannot access webcam, it is in use by another process" making it appear that it is specifically one or the other device, but in most cases, other apps agree that the devices are fine.

I uninstalled McAfee 'Firewall' and used another product -- this corrected
the problem with WLM9, XP sp3 using Microsoft LifeCam 6000. I reinstalled
McAfee firewall - broke it again - uninstalled - works perfect. Now using
another firewall product.

RE: WLM 9 - Video kaput 'We are unable to run audio & video setup'

I have McAfee and your workaround did not work.
My webcam works perfectly with Skype so I know it's this useless WLM2009
which was offered as an upgrade in an email from the Windows Live team. I
wish I'd never heard of them!
I want to delete WLM2009 and revert to the previous 8.5... version which
worked perfectly but I cannot. I deleted all the WLM2009 software and tried
to install from Microsoft's web page but the installation fails.
Does anyone know how to get a working copy of Messenger. Using Google only
offers up version 8.1 which also doesn't install.
thanks

Re: WLM 9 - Video kaput 'We are unable to run audio & video setup'

Yes, I too ran into the same problem with a fresh out of the box Acer Aspire 5520 when installing WLM 2009. Acer's response was quite clear. They are not responsible for 3rd party software installation? I did as most have I uninstalled the whole WLM 2009 Essentials in remove/install programs and loaded in WLM 8.5 which has no issues whatsoever? So I feel WLM 2009 still has some issues to correct before they offer a free upgrade, like maybe attach a warning of possible incompatibility, until they develop a fix for this particular issue? Not meaning to slam them because it does happen not only with Microsoft, just that what an inconveinance for inexperienced users. But yes downgrading is the immediate solution at this time until it is corrected from what I see.

Yep I saw it, but like I told Mike, beyond downgranding I have no other advice right now.

I can tell you however that my ancient Intel CS430 webcam works fine though.
