| | Contacts disappeared in Live messenger 2009 Hi there, I hope somebody can help me with this. Already when the beta of WLM 2009 came out, I installed it on my desktop pc.... to find back then that I did not have any contacts anymore in WLM. Looking into my hotmail account, all contacts were still there, and on my laptop running WLM 8.5, everything was also fine. So, I uninstalled WLM 2009, re-installed 8.5 and all of my problems were gone, cause my contact list worked again there. I now installed the official release of WLM 2009, to find myself in the same issue again. My contact list is empty. If I look under options - Privacy, nobody there, and also nobody has added me to their list if I have to believe it. I also installed WLM 2009 on my laptop now, and it works fine there, so contacts are there etc. I run Windows XP Pro on my Desktop and XP Home on my laptop. Any suggestions what to do ? Uninstalling and re-installing doesn't do the trick, signin out and in multiple times doesn't work. Deleting the contacts folder didn't help.... Thanks upfront, Michiel |

| | Re: Contacts disappeared in Live messenger 2009 This also happened when I upgraded to the latest version of WLMessenger on both of my computers. However, is it a "problem"? I think there might be a logical explanation. The complete contacts list for my Live identity is stored upon a central server, which I can access on the web via my name@xxxxxx address. My contact list includes email addresses at many different domains. However, only seven of those contacts use name@xxxxxx, name@xxxxxx or name@xxxxxx email addresses. When I start WLMessenger, the program synchronizes my contacts list with the data on a central server at Live.com. Following synchronization, previous versions of WLMessenger displayed the complete contact list - including addresses at non-Microsoft domains. The latest version of WLMessenger only shows shows contacts that have name@xxxxxx, name@xxxxxx or name@xxxxxx .com email addresses. AFAIK, the chat and instant messaging options of WLMessenger do not work with non-Microsoft addresses. Consequently, there seems little point in showing addresses at external domains in the Messenger contacts list. Conversely, the latest version of WLMail (which synchronizes with the same central server) does display my complete contact list. Again, this is logical, because you can use WLMail as your email client to send messages to any address. | | Re: Contacts disappeared in Live messenger 2009 Hi Bob, thanks for thinking along, however, also for me, this is not what is wrong. When signing in to Live messenger 2009, my whole contact list is gone, and I get the cute message asking me if I want to add some contacts. 99% of my contacts are using either a hotmail, msn or live address, so neither way I am afraid the answer relates to the problem I'm experiencing. Should you happen to think of any other idears on this however, please tell them. Fiddling around in the options by the way also didn't do the trick for me. | | Re: Contacts disappeared in Live messenger 2009 Don't hold your breath, but I have had one further thought. I think this problem could be caused by the way your contacts have been stored on the central server. If so, the following method MIGHT offer a solution. Use your browser to sign into your Live identity (via the webmail interface). Select Contacts and under "People" (on the left hand side of the window), click on "Messenger Contacts". Is the list populated with ALL (or some ) of your hotmail, msn or live messaging contacts? If not, return to the "All contacts" list and edit each contact separately. Basically, you must enter a valid email address in the "Windows Live ID" field - and check the box labeled "Use this address with Windows Live Messenger". Otherwise, the latest version of WLMessenger will not show the contacts. Having edited a few of the contacts, sign out of WLMessenger. Then, sign in again. I have suggested you try this with just a few of your contacts - because I wouldn't want you to spend too much time, doing something that doesn't work. However, I have tested the theory by removing and replacing a few of my IM contacts via the webmail interface. It worked for me. | | Re: Contacts disappeared in Live messenger 2009 Hi Bob, sorry for the late response, I had to wait till after work to test it at home ofcourse. Unfortunately, this also didn't help. Not all my livemail contacts were there as live messenger contacts, but that is also correct, cause not everyone is on messenger. I did make some changes to a few persons though, however this hasn't helped. Also, please note that as I stated in my first post, I also got WLM 2009 installed on my laptop as well.. And on my laptop it's working fine, also with the same @hotmail.com address..... Thanks, Michiel "Bob Lucas" wrote: Quote: > Don't hold your breath, but I have had one further thought. | XP x86 | Re: Contacts disappeared in Live messenger 2009 with custom domain / email address Just installed (XP, x86) Live Messenger 2009 and found that all my contacts appear to be gone... Messenger 2009 has (see menu contacts) options to import all your Live contacts. Tried all there, and probably I now have sent invitation emails to people I haven't spoken to in years :/ And the contacts do not re-appear in live messenger 2009 :( I use msn@devvie-nuis.com (a custom domain). I removed live messenger 2009 and installed mesesnger live 8.5 again (MastaLine.com - Windows Live Messenger 8.5 Final uitgebracht!). All contacts were there. Via the Contacs menu I exported all my contacts to a local file. I then removed live messenger 8.5, installed live messenger 2009 again and imported the saved contact list. Messenger live 2009 contact list stays EMPTY :( What-de-neuk? : ( I again looked at my contact list via login.live.com and all the options offered. All contacts are imported (the initial 67 contacs before importing local file are now at the correct amount, 99, according to login.live.com - but still, mesenger live 2009 shows NONE of my contacs). So for now I gave up. I will test on another computer with live messenger 2009 installed and log-in there. That will determine if this is a local computer problem or a new microsoft "feature" (I hope not:). For now, I remove once again live messenger 2009 and install live messenger 8.5. It will do for now : ) For now; PEACE! | | Re: Contacts disappeared in Live messenger 2009 Greetings, You might try removing your "Windows Live Contacts" folder (which is just a cache anyway). On XP you can find this folder at: \Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts Where username is your Windows username. Additionally, some of these folders will be hidden by default, to see them simply press the Alt key on the keyboard in any Windows Explorer window to bring up the toolbar, click Tools, then Folder Options, then the View tab, and then choose 'Show hidden files and folders'. After click OK, they should appear with the other folders. -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2009 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "devnullius" <guest@xxxxxx-email.com> wrote in message news:bcfdd0dcba0b2bc056e1495a04294e20@xxxxxx-gateway.com...
