WebCam Live Messenger 2009 -> mirror failure

Hello,

I use the Live Messenger from Microsoft.
If I go on Setup the WebCam the picture is fine, correct direction.

If I use a contact and chat with my friend, I see the WebCam as
mirror, but why?
What is wrong?

The WebCam is on the left side, On right is the chat.

It is possible, I can adjust the windows
Left - Chat
Right, -- the WebCams

Greats Sandra

Re: WebCam Live Messenger 2009 -> mirror failure

Greetings Sandra,

This is 'by design' and in fact was in earlier versions (although you could turn it off
before, the registry key which controlled this no longer exists however). Your contact
however will see the video correctly, so it's just on your side this effect exists.

For the record, I don't like this either.

it is possible to make a update.
If yes, where can I download it?

Hi,

I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but I think you want to downgrade to the previous
version.

You can do that by uninstalling 2009 in Add or Remove Programs/Programs and Features in the
Control Panel (note: it's under Windows Live Essentials, it doesn't say Messenger), then
installing 8.5 from here:

Re: WebCam Live Messenger 2009 -> mirror failure

Why is this by design? Why would someone want to see their own image mirrored?

"Ask anyone who looks in a mirror" is the simple answer(*).

A more complex answer is that everyone is accustomed to seeing their
mirror image, and can us it to comb their hair or shave (usually only
the men). When faced with a "live view", I found it quite disconcerting.
However, I got used to it, and now find the mirrored image equally
disconcerting. I showed a book to the person on my video call, and
because it was mirrored, I didn't realise that it was also upside down.
With the "real world" image, the problem would have been immediately
obvious.

(*) Landlady asks a visitor if they have a good memory for faces. When
asked "Why?" she answers "because there's no mirror in the bathroom".

Re: WebCam Live Messenger 2009 -> mirror failure

It's rather stupid of microsoft to eliminate the option to view one's own webcam image the same way that the person on the other end is seeing it (not mirrored). It wrecks communication if you have to constantly imagine the other person is seeing you backwards from what you're seeing. Come on, Microsoft, please add the option to NOT mirror my own image back in the next version!

In the meantime, does anyone know of a hack that can be employed to un-flip my own webcam preview image?

Thanks.
