Change LIVE ID to new email address.

Hello,

I recently decided that I am going to change my email address from my
boring old Yahoo account to something more exciting like j@xxxxxx.

Everything is working fine, but when I try to change my live account
that I have all of my Zune, XBOX, Spaces, Mesh, Etc.. it tells me that I
cannot use an email address that has @isimian.com in it.

Then I emailed support and they tell me that some part of @isimian.com
is on the "Reserved Words" list and can't be used in a live ID. The
advise that I got from the MS Support Rep was

"Reserved words are names that are associated to a known organization,
company, represent a known people, and connote sales and marketing. To
resolve your issue, I suggest that you try registering for another
e-mail name that does not contain @isimian.com."

How does that work? They expect me to just register a new domain name?
How do I know what words I can't use in my FQDN?

Re: Change LIVE ID to new email address.

Greetings Johnny,

First and most importantly, the "changing e-mail" feature on Live ID is not working correctly
right now. If you actually go ahead and do this, your Messenger contact list will not be
updated correctly. That said, you should hold off changing for now regardless.

I actually don't have the list either and probably won't have much luck obtaining it either.
What I can tell you is that this is standard Windows Live practice and additionally,
Messenger itself has some specific search strings for sending URLs within IMs (to block
spam/malware links) which essentially functions the same.

Might be worth splitting up words in the domain you're trying (not entirely clear if isimian
is what you're trying or if it's just an example) and just trying to register a few of them
individually to see which go through. You can easily remove the tests afterwards.

Re: Change LIVE ID to new email address.

J! Thanks for your response.

I have been going around in circles on this one. Normally I wouldn't
care about the live ID as I have so many of them that I NEVER use, but
this one is the one that I use for MS billing for Zune and XBOX360. I
am consilidating all my personal accounts with Google, MSN, Hotmail,
Live Mail, Yahoo, Earthlink, Comcast, Qwest, into my own email address
in a domain that I own. To date this is the only problem that I have had.

I have a separate LiveID that I use for my professional life to IM
clients, and use MS services such ad Open License and MSDN. I use my
office email address for this and have never had any problems in 8 years.

After countless emails to tech support, the result is that they are
going to look into it. I don't know which is worse. Corresponding in
email with someone that doesn't speak english or with someone that
doesn't understand the product and keeps telling me to talk to my
"Domain Administrator" to resolve the problem with my domain.

Re: Change LIVE ID to new email address.

Hi Johnny,

Yeah I totally understand. One other thing I can tell you is that it's my understanding that
after you've had a few e-mails back and forth, the support people then get the permission to
escalate it - so hopefully you'll get some more info or they'll actually go ahead and fix
this for you.

Holy Cow! Now they are just ignoring my replies. Here is the most
recent reply I received.

<snipped>
I certainly would like to help, however, the Isimian.com domain is part
of a Reserved Domain that is why you are unable to sign up for a Windows
Luive ID using j@xxxxxx. To resolve this, John, I suggest that you
contact the Administrator of the isimian.com domain for assistance.

I am about to lose my mind. At this point I am starting to think that I
am talking to bots and not real people.

From what I can tell, nobody had it. I even looked in the wayback
machine and there is no reference going all the way back to 1997. I
have been doing a little research and I found this

http://www.silesti.net/work/reserved...a-new-live-id/

There are a couple other articles out there. It looks like LiveID hates
domains hosted by Google Apps. I guess I could trick LiveIV by using
Live Mail for Domains to add the @isimian.com account to my existing
LiveID and when they accept it switch it back..but that's quite a bit of
work for a small amount of satisfaction.

All in all I think the most frustrating this about this has been
Microsoft's TERRIBLE support. They have no phone number for LiveID
support, and their email support has a 2 day turn around and half the
time the person responding to the message never read the entire thread
so they just give me the same answer over and over.

Re: Change LIVE ID to new email address.

Hi,

Well just to be clear, there are reserved domains (beyond the Microsoft ones). If you are
using Live Domains (called Windows Live Admin Center), then your domain is now reserved and
you have to specifically authorize IDs (as per the link here).

Additionally, if a domain is registered for federation with Office Communications Server,
then Live IDs won't be able to be created on that domain (and existing ones will be prompted
to switch to new IDs).

I'm not sure why Google applications domains would be part of either of these situations
though.

Thanks, after many hours of fiddling...I had created an account that I
never planned to use for isimian.com in domains.live.com to take a peek
at the options. After I removed the domain, everything started to work.

It's a shame that nobody wrote that down somewhere that the LIVEID's are
somehow connected to the Live Domains and Live Mail. All this Live
stuff is confusing.

Thanks for your help Johnathan!
