Just installed latest version of WLM 2009 - even WORSE!

wow, thought the last version was buggy and now this is even worse!
Everything hangs as badly as before and worse when trying to access winks or suchlike. Even if the other person sends you one, it hangs WLM.
Wow, would have thought Microsoft would have done a little QA testing on this product by now.

Re: Just installed latest version of WLM 2009 - even WORSE!

Greetings Bernie,

Is it just a hang where it freezes up for a second and then returns -- or is it hanging the
application permanently?

If the former, then I know what you're talking about. If the latter, then we're seeing
different things.

Hi Jonathan
It hangs (not responding) for maybe 30 secs each time I go to send a contact an instant message the first time each session. Also, hangs for maybe 15 secs every time i click on winks or someone sends me one. Just seems to be as common or even more so than last version.

Re: Just installed latest version of WLM 2009 - even WORSE!

Hi Jonathan,

I have uninstalled and installed three times now and cannot fix the problem.

There is a recurring error - Error 80072745 - with no solution at all.

Cheers

Hans

For me the hole vista system hangs, ctrl-alt-del won't help. Forced power
shutdown needed. Live forced a new beta couple of days ago, since then the
system is broken. As long as I don't start messenger, the system is fine.
Once I start messenger it's a mattor of minutes to hours until the whole
system freezes (no blue screen, just freezes the screen with whatever you
just were doing)

Re: Just installed latest version of WLM 2009 - even WORSE!

Hi Pascale,

Just to be clear, the last two Messenger releases are considered "released" versions, it is
not a beta.

If the whole system is going, it might be a video/audio device which Messenger is trying to
enumerate at some point.

To not just guess at this, you'd have to do some remote debugging to Windows or use a PS/2
keyboard to initiate a manual crash dump.

One quick thing you could do is uninstall 2009 and use 8.5 instead. To do so, uninstall
Windows Live Messenger 2009 from the Programs and Features applet in the Control Panel (it'll
be under Windows Live Essentials) and then grab the previous version (which is 2008/8.5) from
here:

Re: Just installed latest version of WLM 2009 - even WORSE!

My Live Messenger 2009 hangs after I sign in, and it takes 99% CPU. I had to
uninstall it and picked up the previous version (8.5).

So many people have had issue of hanging since very early version of
messenger, and they have to search for solution on the web, it makes me want
to question MSFT messenger team's professionalism. At least there are a few
things they need to think about:
1) review the design. in some cases, hanging is caused by malfunction of
UPnP on router. Is there any way not to mess up with UPnP?
2) in my case, I just replaced 2009 version with the previous one. so you
cannot blame router. What is going on?
3) How could this 2009 version pass QA?
4) If you realy have to use UPnP, and it has been proven to be a common
cause of hanging, can you check status of UPnP before using it? If UPnP is
not as expected, you can give a warning instead of just hang here.

Many routers, especially older versions, don't get UPnP right. MSFT can't
help it when Linksys gets it wrong. It is a security hole, anyway, and I
stopped enabling UPnP on the router after seeing descriptions of exploits
that even relatively benign adware/spyware can pull.

I haven't tried it, yet. I am usually a bit later than most. Rarely beta
tester. But now that the latest version is nagging, I might just give it a
go.
