Installation rolls bck

I've downloaded the installer for Windows Live programs - although I'm only
interested in upgrading Messenger.

The installation prgresses to something like 99% at which point it proceeds
to roll back!

What's going on?

I've read previous posts here which suggest removing all previous
installations of Live programs - which I've done - but it doesn't seem to
help.

Advice appreciated.

Re: Installation rolls bck

Greetings Steve,

As an easy starting point, try manually installing Messenger by simply downloading and
running the MSI file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/w3qfe/wlm.asp

If that installs without an error (it'll just install and disappear if it's successful), then
install the Communications Platform:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/red...e/contacts.asp

If that installs correctly, you can now use Messenger by running it from the Start menu,
Windows Live folder. However, I suspect either of these will error out and will tell you
what the problem is. There's also an log generated by the installer, but just running these
is certainly easier than locating and parsing the log file.

Installation rolls back

Jonathan, you're a star!

Installation of that file you linked to went ahead perfectly and didn't
quiver once! now have the latest version of Messenger up and running.

Tell me - what might I expect that I don't already have if I install the
other file you linked to? Anything especially useful?

Re: Installation rolls bck

Hi Steve,

I assume you're talking about the Communications Platform? All the latest Windows Live
applications utilize the Communications Platform to access your Windows Live Contacts. In
fact, most of them (Messenger included) won't work without it, let's face it there's not much
point to Messenger without contacts.

The reason why it is working anyway is that the previous version of the Contacts Platform you
already have installed still appears (I've only done preliminary testing) to be compatible
with this latest release. Unfortunately I really have no real data knowing what's been
changed or fixed in this component but I can tell you that the previous beta version was
notorious for corrupting it's local store of contacts.

I personally would at least try upgrading to the latest Communications Platform to avoid any
possible issues in the future, but if you wish to continue using this the way you have it,
the worst that would probably happen is just Messenger crashing and needing to be restarted.

Jonathan, many thanks for that.

On the basis of "If it ain't broke don't fix it" I think I'll leave well
alone.

Many thanks for your help though.
