This is ridiculous.

I read the hype on WLM and assumed (incorrectly, it seems) that I would be
able to use this new version with the contacts from MSN Messenger.

There seems to be NO way to use that information and, for that matter, no
way to even OPEN the MSN version in order to GET that information and enter
it manually.

This is not an improvement in any manner, way, shape or form.

Likewise with the replacement (Windows Mail) for Outlook Express. It has
lost a great deal of its functionality (no longer able to check Hotmail or
Gmail from within the program). Now I must do things in a roundabout and
much more difficult manner.

Again, this is not an improvement in any manner, way, shape or form.

Since when is reducing functionality and ease of use considered an
improvement?

Re: This is ridiculous.

Both of your problems do not exist on my Vista box. Both Windows mail and
and messenger 09 work perfectly just as they should.. Windows mail was quite
capable of downloading all my email accounts easily although I have since
moved to windows live as I prefer it.. Messenger 09 runs smooth as silk on
this machine and many other friends also use it after upgrading from either
msn messenger or live 07 or 08

Both of my problems DO exist on my Vista box and these programs do not work
with the full functionality of their predecessors.

Windows Mail is incapable of picking up Hotmail and/or Gmail. This
functionality was removed during the migration from Outlook Express to
Windows Mail and this information is in the documentation with the "new" and
less-functional software.

Messenger 09 runs fine on this machine as well. However, there is no
capability to import the userlist from MSN Messenger. I don't even have an
icon or Menu listing for it any longer. I was not allowed to use the
original login from MSN Messenger on Windows Live. The capability of
importing this information was overlooked or deliberately left out of the
newest version.,

Both problems exist and there appears to be not a damn thing I can do to
correct it.

This was explained in my original message, so all I can determine is that
you didn't bother to fully read and comprehend what was written.

Re: This is ridiculous.

I don't know what to tell you but since I still use my name and password
from way back when I used windows messenger as well as msn messenger. It
still works and yet the e-mail address (or contact name) that it refers to
was discontinued several years ago, as I have upgraded my messenger program
over the years all my contacts were instantly available to me. I did
thoroughly read your post as I always do before I consider responding to
same. My previous post I was mistaken about windows mail but thought for
sure I had done that but maybe it was only Windows live mail that gives me
that functionality. My sincere apologies for that error!

Re: This is ridiculous.

Hi,

Windows Live Messenger, MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger all operate on the same IM
network with the same .NET Passports (now called Windows Live IDs) as always with the same
contact information that you've always had. If you cannot sign in using your old ID, then
we'll need to know some more specifics as to what you're seeing, especially any error code
(click the 'Show details' button in the error message to see it).

As a side note, Windows Live ID also has the ability to change your ID while retaining all
your settings and contact list (when it's working, this feature is hit or miss at the moment
unfortunately), and Messenger has had the ability to save your contact list and import it
anywhere you like for nearly 10 years now. Although obviously you would need to sign in to
the old ID to make use of it.

Off topic for this newsgroup, actually, but Windows Mail can indeed pick up
Hotmail and Gmail. You need to enable POP for Gmail and you need to use POP/SMTP
to access Hotmail and it will only pull mail from the Inbox, deleting it from
the server. You can upgrade to Windows Live Mail which provides IMAP for Gmail
and will Sync all folders with Hotmail accounts.
Note that Hotmail POP support has been recently enabled for all Hotmail users
globally in recent weeks.

Must be a PEBKAC issue. Since Windows Live Hotmail has reinstated POP3
access, any MS client has been able to access Windows Live Hotmail. All MS
clients have always been able to access Google Mail.
