I know this is an old post but I'm having the same issue (I've currently got a support call open with MS about this)
There seems to be an issue when trying to use Remote Assistance between Messenger 2009 and 2009, and Messenger 2009 and 2008. When using 2008 to 2008 or earlier it all works fine.
When I test with 2009 to 2009, I receive the request, accept it and then nothing happens. It's the same if I request assistance from a 2008 client to a 2009 client.
If I do the request the other way round (i.e. from a 2009 client to a 2008 client), the 2008 client receives the mini pop up from Remote Assistance saying trying to connect and then disappears after about 10 minutes.
I've tested this with a number of contacts on my contact list, and they have tested it between themselves as well but to no avail.
I currently have 3 machines on my local network, all with firewalls turned off, all with static Internet IP addresses. Two of them have Messenger 2008 and one has 2009. I've tested between all three and the results are as I posted above.
Does anyone have a fix for this?
Thanks
Synn

Could you be a little more specific as to what you're seeing when you try? Some of the RA

may not be possible to overcome (very easily anyway).
