Updated to WLM 2009 essentials....Don't work at all.

Before I updated, WMgr was working fine. After the update it said there was
an error code 8e5e05e3. On all the WL programs that come up it gives me an
error. This is what it says :
AppName: wlcomm.exe AppVer: 14.0.8064.206 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.5512 Offset: 00036eca

A Windows Live Communications Platform Error.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling and this does nothing.
I can still log in on the web but what do i do to get this new update to work?

Re: Updated to WLM 2009 essentials....Don't work at all.

Greetings,

Beginning with 2009, all the Windows Live applications use a single service for access your
Windows Live Contacts (which is what this wlcomm.exe executable is). Therefore, if that
component has problems, they all will have problems, especially Messenger, which is useless
without contacts.

As a starting point, you'll need to clear out the cache of contacts stored in your Windows
user profile. It's just a cache, so you won't lose anything by doing this.

To do so, head over the following folder at (for XP):
\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live
Contacts

Where username is your Windows username. Additionally, some of these folders will be hidden
by default, to see them simply press the
Alt key on the keyboard in any Windows Explorer window to bring up the toolbar, click Tools,
then Folder Options, then the View tab, and then choose 'Show hidden files and folders'.
After click OK, they should appear with the other folders.

You'll need to remove this Windows Live Contacts folder. After it's gone, restart Messenger
and sign in again. If you still have the problem, other possible things which interfere with
wlcomm are custom windows themes (try going back to a default XP one), nvidia forceware, and
various security/antivirus software (uninstall these to see if they're part of the problem).

Jonathan Kay,

i have done what you said in your reply, but nvidia forceware which i have
installed, if i uninstal that i will no longer have an internet connection as
it is part of my motherboards drivers, because its an nforce board, so
basically my mb? is incompatable with msn messenger?

or are the ways around this, usually if i get problems with msn ill download
an older version of the programme but they all seem to force me to update to
the current 2009 version

Re: Updated to WLM 2009 essentials....Don't work at all.

Hi Andrew,

No, not necessarily. In fact, I've only heard of forceware fixing the problem once. This is
one of those things where everyone has a different solution, which means either some shared
component between these things is at fault, or wlcomm is just affected by all sorts of
things.

Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to get at a PC where this is a problem to do any real
research on my own, so all I can do is accumulate other solutions and guesswork. That said,
downgrading to 8.5 is a sure fix.
