Messenger stopped updating

Starting a week or so ago, Live Messenger in the system tray stopped updating/refreshing itself. It displays the number of new email messages that were in my Inbox when I first signed in that day, but doesn’t reflect any changes to that number: whether I’ve read, deleted, or have received new messages, it no longer registers.

Since this problem started, it has also stopped giving an audio alert when new messages come in.

I haven’t made any changes to my system, so I have to assume this new problem stems from Messenger itself, or perhaps a Windows update altered its behavior. (BTW, I have Messenger 2009, & Vista 64 Home Premium.)

Any ideas on how I can get Messenger back on track the way it used to be?
