Messenger slow? IE8 can be the cause!

Bit of a warning: if you recently did install Messenger and Internet
Explorer 8 and it is all slow? IE 8 is the cause. Did read a lot about it
but I also had it myself: I did install Internet Explorer 8 and after that
Live Messenger was sooooo slow ... but not only Messenger ... no, my whole
system was slooooow :-(
After an uninstall of IE8 (which was without any problems (much to my
surprise)) and automaticly back to IE7, all was fine again :-)

This all on a Windows XP Home SP3, dual core, 3 Gb DDR RAM system.

Hi Menno,

Quick question -- do you have Windows Search 4.0 installed on that machine? IE8 indexes your
web pages, so I'm just wondering if that may have had something to do with, since indexing
can only partially run as idle on XP. Just a thought really.

Re: Messenger slow? IE8 can be the cause!

Hi Jonathan!

Ha no, I did install that when it was in my Update list (2 months ago orso)
.... but almost just as soon I did uninstall it again ... that new Windows
search is ... well, crap is the right word I guess? ;-) Somehow MS wants to
intergrate EVERYTHING and IMO that is just nonsense and totally not needed.
And also no Spybot thing that could IE8 and system slow down.
But it doesn't matter ... had time to see what IE8 is like and it is nothing
worth looking at so back to IE7 for when I need it (Firefox still my main
browser, it beats any version of IE on all fronts ;-) )

Sadly to say is that somehow MS is making all kind of things right now that
are crap ... never been a real MS fan (as you know ;-) ) but lately the
design alone is something to cry about, let alone the many many bugs ... and
the totally not needed "features" which MS thinks we all need ... but that
is another, non-topic related subject.

Thanx though :-))

Removing IE8 is one of the first suggestions I see touted in my
companies internal newsgroups when people complain about sudden poor
performance in applications such as Lotus Notes or Sametime.
It makes for interesting threads:

Person A: All of a sudden my [application] is really slow
Person B: Uninstall IE8
Person A: Wow! that's amazing. How did you know I had IE8?

Re: Messenger slow? IE8 can be the cause!

Hi,

Well this is one of the major things some people forget about while they're busy touting the
favourite browser of the week (whether it's Firefox, Chrome, Opera or whatever) -- IE (and
its underlying controls) is used everywhere. I once integrated the Gecko engine into a
line-of-business application after many requests a few years ago. Requests quickly came back
in to switch back to IE/Trident

With the exception of an underpowered older thinkpad of mine, I haven't noticed a significant
speed decrease against my known IE-using apps though.
