MSN connectivity problems

Hi,

We use MSN daily and have noticed that version 14 (2009) disconnects quite
frequently. So far I haven't found a user on XP that is having the problem,
so it could be a Vista + v14 issue.

Downgrading the users to v8.5 (2008) works perfectly. Anyone else having
similar problems or a resolution?

Re: MSN connectivity problems

I'm running Vista + v14 at work and at home - no connectivity issues here.

Re: MSN connectivity problems

I found a user on XP that had the issue, so it isn't that. How did you get
the new version, upgrade or install from new?

Re: MSN connectivity problems

I've used MS IM/MSN IM/WLM for a long time - but I mostly just upgrade
unless I absolutely must install fresh.

When I install, I tend to install directly from http://download.live.com

Hope that helps.

Re: MSN connectivity problems

Greetings Martin,

There's some possibilities here, but generally isn't the fault of Messenger on its own (ie.
reinstalling it isn't going to do anything). By networking, I generally mean a residential
router or modem which may be doing some sort of translation of the Messenger protocol, just
simply not holding onto connections in the way expected, or whatever.

As such as a first step, if you do own such a device, make sure it has the latest firmware
available from the manufacturer. Also, a power cycle (unplug, plug back in) can sometimes do
wonders for such problems.

Finally on Vista, there is a possibility of the network stack's autotuning capability
interfering in your configuration. To turn
off this feature, open up an elevated command prompt and type the following:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

If you're unsure what I mean by an "elevated command prompt", this explains it:
