| | No XP 64 bit support? I went to install MSN Messenger on a Windows XP 64 bit machine, and it failed. Browsing the website revealed this interesting bit of info: "Operating system: Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (32-bit edition only)" Am I missing something, or did Microsoft really drop XP64 support for messenger? |

| | Re: No XP 64 bit support? Greetings, Unfortunately, they haven't supported XP 64-bit beginning with Windows Live Messenger 8.5 (2008). However, if you install Messenger manually from the Microsoft Installer files, as opposed to the suite setup, it should work (I say should because I haven't tested the latest update for Messenger 2009 on XP 64 and don't have it installed anywhere at the moment to try). You can see which installers you need and download them at the following link: http://messengergeek.spaces.live.com...DA1!1723.entry -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2009 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "Zootal" <usenet@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:uHYvra45JHA.1372@xxxxxx Quote: > I went to install MSN Messenger on a Windows XP 64 bit machine, and it failed. | | Re: No XP 64 bit support? Greetings, You could use that also, but there are a number of nice connectivity bug fixes in 8.5 and above. It's fine to use 8.1, but if you have problems making file transfer connections and so on, you may want to consider updating using the manual installers. -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2009 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "Zootal" <usenet@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:eeVRP3G6JHA.6004@xxxxxx Quote: > Thanks. | | Re: No XP 64 bit support? I ran the messenger.msi from the link you posted. It appears to install it, but it won't log in - it immediately gives "we can't sign you in to Windows Live Messenger....service is temporarily unavailable...Error code 80040154". Well, maybe it is, it seems to go up and down often enough. I'll try later and see if I can get in. | | Re: No XP 64 bit support? PS - the error happens way to fast. I think something else is wrong, but not sure what. It *immediately* tells me that the windows messenger service is unavailable. There is no way it can go out to their servers, wherever they are, and come back with an unavailable status that quickly. I registered msxml3.dll sucesfully. I installed the XML parser. Still no connection. So then I installed the comm platform. Surprise, surprise, now it works . A little bit of RTFM can go a long way..."Zootal" <usenet@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:uUjmn7W6JHA.4892@xxxxxx Quote: >I ran the messenger.msi from the link you posted. Hi, Heh, yes you need the comm platform as it handles all the contact work (contact list), etc. -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2009 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "Zootal" <usenet@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:OvJyICX6JHA.5012@xxxxxx Quote: > PS - the error happens way to fast.
