| | Live Messenger keeps launching Hi, Is there a setting (I've looked but can't find one) that turns off Live Messenger so that when I go to SkyDrive or Live Calender keeps Live Messenger from launching in the systray? It doesn't sign me in, which is fine. I've looked on Live Messenger's Options but can't find one. I unchecked launch the client when I log in to Windows, connect to the Internet, but nothing. I am logged in to Windows Live Mail (email-client) but I don't know if that's might be it? -- cirrus minor |

| | Re: Live Messenger keeps launching Greetings Cirrus, Yes you can, but it's not a direct option and not easy to find. To get there, open up Internet Explorer and choose the Tools menu. Then if you're using IE7, choose Manage Add-ons and Enable or Disable Add-ons. If you're using IE8, just choose Manage Add-ons. Show the entries that run without requiring permission and the specific entry you'll want to disable is "Windows Live", which corresponds to the \Program Files\Windows Live\msgsc.14.0.8050.1202.dll file and CLSID/Class ID is {E1771B7F-98BE-407F-BA67-AA16ADA5D0C5}. You may need to show the various columns to find the exact one (there will be multiple 'Windows Live' entries). In IE8 you can also double-click each entry for the full information to show. After you've found it, choose the button to Disable it and Messenger will no longer be started by any Microsoft websites. Be aware however that if/when Messenger is updated, this will be need to be done again (and will be a different file and CLSID). -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2009 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "cirrus minor" <cirrusminor@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:632EF7BA-E53A-4C19-98C2-4F1A36750E5B@xxxxxx Quote: > Hi, > > Is there a setting (I've looked but can't find one) that turns off Live > Messenger so that when I go to SkyDrive or Live Calender keeps Live Messenger > from launching in the systray? | | Re: Live Messenger keeps launching Hi Jonathan, Thanks for the reply :-) I found an "Windows Live" entry with some of the info in your reply but the "msgsc" (sorry, I don't know what that is) number differs. "{E1771B7F-98BE-407F-BA67-AA16ADA5D0C5}" is the same but "msgsc.14.0.8050.1202" is "msgsc.14.0.8064.0206" on my machine. Does this matter? Thanks again for the reply. -- cirrus minor "Jonathan Kay [MVP]" wrote: Quote: > Greetings Cirrus, > > Yes you can, but it's not a direct option and not easy to find. > > To get there, open up Internet Explorer and choose the Tools menu. It worked :-) I disabled the Add-ons entry you told me about, close and relaunched IE8 then went to SkyDrive, LiveCal and for good measure the Windows Live team blog and in all three sites, I got a balloon popup telling me that an add-on was trying to access the site. Live Messenger did not launch in the systray. Thanks you, your assistance is greatly appreciated!
