| Newbie | Windows mesanger will not connect (Key ports) Hi there Recently, due to viruses in my computer, i had to wipe my computer back to its factor conidtions. After i had finished reinstalling vista and installing Norton and doing a virus scan i trid to use MSN live (newest one) and it said it could not connect due to key pors. I ran through the troubleshooting guide but it was no help. Also i cannot use Windows update (error : 80072edf) Im using Vista Home Premium and norton 360 security. I have tried disableing my firewall and it does not help. I have also tried entering %windir%\system32\regsvr325\system32\msxml3.dll and C:\Windows\system32>netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled into the run thingy but neither work. I think both say that they cannot locate a certain file. Please help this is driving me mad and any help is greatly appreciated. |

| Guest | Re: Windows mesanger will not connect (Key ports) Greetings Solideye, The key ports entry means it can't make a connection to the Messenger servers. That said, I would uninstall (not just disable) Norton as a starting point as even disabled, it has been known to block network connectivity. Also, does Internet Explorer actually work and allow you to browse web sites? Both Messenger and Windows Update will use the same methods as IE to attempt connections, so IE actually working is essential for these functions in Windows to work. To be honest, if you've really just re-installed Windows by resetting back to the factory install, you may just want to do so again. However, this time test each product as you install it to verify it works and you may be able to isolate what specifically is causing your issue. Additionally, if you don't necessarily want to reinstall again, you might find System Restore useful to simply undo changes on a per day basis (you'll find this in the Vista start menu). -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2009 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "Solideye" <guest@xxxxxx-email.com> wrote in message news:f118cdac8587935f0a08ac61f7c939a5@xxxxxx-gateway.com... | Newbie | Re: Windows mesanger will not connect (Key ports) thanks man, i will try unistalling norton to see if it is responsible. Also my internet explorer can connect to the internet but sometimes it just switches itself off and a message saying "Internet explorer has stopped working" appears. This happens randomly and it will do it on any webpage. But yeah ill uninstall norton and see if it still works (Will i be able to re-download it of the norton website, i bought that 2 year thing were you can not download it for 2 years) |

| Newbie | Re: Windows mesanger will not connect (Key ports) Nope, tried uninstalling Norton (uninstalled it in Add/Remove programs then used the Norton uninstaller) and it didnt seem to work. Also ive noticed that when i troubleshoot in msn it doesnt test for wireless even though im using a wireless connection. I dont really want to resort to a System reset and this problem has been with the computer ever since i done the original reset, so i dont think system restore will work. Thanks for the help but do you have any other suggestions. |

| Guest | RE: Windows mesanger will not connect (Key ports) For months I have been unable to use the update service either automatic or manual on my Vista laptop. Every attempt ended up with the 80072efd error. I have tried all of the fixes on offer to no avail. TODAY I CRACKED IT!!! It turned out that I had User Account Control (UAC) set on, as recommended by Microsoft and presumably set by default. I had never heard of it but it appears to be one of the new facilities in Vista. Anyway I turned it off and suddenly it all works. It found 62 updates which took about an hour and a half to download and install and it all went through without a hitch. So if you are having the dreaded 80072edf error give it a try. In Control Panel click User Accounts, click User Accounts again, click Turn User Account Control On or Off, delete the tick from the box and click OK. There are dire warnings about switching this off so I will need to do more research to find a way of telling UAC to let some things through so that I can switch it back on again. -- Tony One of the first.
