Messenger signing out after a couple of seconds

Hi,

Using Windows Live Messenger build 14.0.8064.206 on XP SP II. However, this
problem is also happening on my home Vista machine (which doesn't have a
firewall running).

I'm able to sign in to messenger and can briefly see my list of contacts,
but I'm then almost immediately signed-out. It then goes to reconnect and the
same thing happens each time.

What I'm noticing is that there appears to be very brief activity in my
Taskbar where several messenger windows look like they're trying to open (but
don't become fully formed in the taskbar). At this point it signs out. I
could probably get a screenshot to show you what I mean, but not sure how I
send it.

Any help appreciated. I'm assuming this is a problem with my account as
opposed to the specific version of Messenger I'm using or the OS. It's also
worth noting that it won't sign me in on my Xbox 360.

Re: Messenger signing out after a couple of seconds

Greetings,

Since it's happening on multiple machines and devices, it sounds like it might be some sort
of problem with your router (I'm going to assume that's how all this is connected). There
are some routers which are trying to rewrite Messenger's packets for connectivity purposes
and end up breaking it. With that assumed, you may want to go to the router manufacturer's
website and make sure you have the latest firmware for the router. If you already do, you
may want to power cycle the router (unplug and plug back in).

Re: Messenger signing out after a couple of seconds

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for getting back to me. This is a problem happening at multiple
different connection points - work, home and (as I found out last night) a
friend's computer - all in different locations. My friend is able to log in
to messenger, but I am not. This suggests to me even more that the problem is
directly connected to my account as opposed to a problem with software,
router, etc.

Re: Messenger signing out after a couple of seconds

Really? Is there nothing I can do about this problem? Is there another place
I can take this question and get some help?

I have a theory about what is happening. In the past I have occasionally had
windows open from other users - their accounts appear to have been hijacked
and they're asking me to click on links, etc. Is it possible that, over a
prolonged period of not signing in, I could have amassed a lot of these and
they're all trying to open on sign-in. At this point MSN logs me out.

I really want to keep on using MSN using an account I've had for close to
ten years, but I really need someone to check my account to see what the
problem is.
