| | Re: windows live communications platform has encountered a problem ?? Greetings Kirsten, Thanks for the specific crash information, I think this is the first I've seen with winmm.dll referenced, although it may just be a fluke. Unfortunately there's a variety of things which can cause this to happen and you really just have to try everything that applies to you. First of all, head over to the following folder, and delete the "Windows Live Contacts" inside it: \Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft Where username is your Windows username. Additionally, some of these folders will be hidden by default, to see them simply press the Alt key on the keyboard in any Windows Explorer window to bring up the toolbar, click Tools, then Folder Options, then the View tab, and then choose 'Show hidden files and folders'. After click OK, they should appear with the other folders. Next, if you're using Windowblinds, you'll need to uninstall that (or at least set it to not use Wlcomm or Messenger) or simply use the built-in standard Windows themes. Next, if you're running any sort of anti-virus or internet security software, you should uninstall it (at least temporarily, to determine if it's part of the problem, you can reinstall it afterwards). Finally, part of Nvidia's optional Forceware software (the "Network Access Manager") has been known to cause problems, you can just uninstall it as well (and use the Windows firewall or another freeware product if you need one). If none of that is helpful, there could be other possibilities regarding sound/video drivers, given the winmm reference. As a last resort, you could also just downgrade to the previous version (8.5). -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2009 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "Kirsten" <Kirsten @discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:117BBECB-23AA-4489-8D76-9A29670A71CD@xxxxxx Quote: > Hello Jonathan! > > This is the message I'm getting whenever I sign on to MSN messenger (version > 2009, and I'm using Windows XP Professional). > > Followed by these error signatures: > > APPNAME: WLCOMM.EXE APPVER:14.0.8064.206 MODNAME: WINMM.DLL > MODVER:5.1.2600.5512 OFFSET: 00004F98 > > I have looked everywhere for a solution and nothing worked.. | | Re: windows live communications platform has encountered a problem Hi Joakim, My earlier answers in the previous post would definitely apply if you're seeing it in ntdll.dll (what the standard crash trace looks like for these things). -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2009 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "Joakim" <Joakim@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:7AA47B1B-F902-4F02-8372-8C83136C0EEB@xxxxxx Quote: > Hi, > > I have a similar problem. | | Re: windows live communications platform has encountered a problem Killing the nvidia forceware network access manager resolved this particular issue for me. Only took about an hour or two to finally find this solution ![]() It's been giving me grief no end and I was using an older version of MSN to get around the issue until I was forced to update it. |
