Why does one istanced of WL Messenger show up two time in the Windows 7 task bar?

....and not at all in the notification area?

....and can this be fixed/changed? I've searched through the cluttered
options, but I don't see anything that looks relevant. This is the identical
version (2009 14.0.80604.206) I have running in Vista, where it shows up on
the taskbar only once, and where it does show up in the notification area.

Re: Why does one istanced of WL Messenger show up two time in the Windows 7 task bar?

Greetings,

It's a feature. The one with your display picture controls the ability to actually end open
the contact list. The other (when shown) is the contact list and be closed/opened as you
wish without signing yourself out.

If you want it to be the old way, just set the msnmsgr.exe executable into Vista
compatibility mode and restart Messenger.

Or if you don't want the the notification area icon at all, and don't want the extra window,
you can use my Messenger Taskbar Hider application:

(although compatibility mode is a bit better of a solution and I would recommend that)

Re: Why does one istanced of WL Messenger show up two time in the Windows 7 task bar?

Thanks, Jonathan. I'll give that a shot--I'm not a big fan of combining
entries on the taskbar, but two instances of WL Mess there had forced me
into combining. Who knows... maybe I'll come to like the combination
approach.

Re: Why does one istanced of WL Messenger show up two time in the Windows 7 task bar?

Hi,

I think you just learn to like it.

My preferred design would just be to have Messenger close when you hit the X to the contact
list window, along with the standard "are you sure you want to sign out?" dialog (which
already exists when you try to sign out with conversations open.

Therefore people would have to be retrained to just hit minimize - which I think would make
more sense in the long run for the new taskbar to work.
