Cant Sign In, Newer Version required

Everytime i try signing in a msg pops up saying "A newer version is
avvailable. You must install the newer version in order to continue"
If i press no it just takes me back to the log in screen.
Im on XP64 Bit and have Live messenger version 2009(14.0.8050.1202)
Strange thing is yesterday i was using older version just fine, i think 8.1
or 8.5
tried installing 8.1 again but it keeps asking me to download newer version.

I found the same problem, but other than an offhand remark to install 8.1
(which leads back to the problem of not allowing a connection until you
upgrade) I have found little help in resolving this.

RE: Cant Sign In, Newer Version required

I'm on Windows Server 2003 (agree its a server OS but still)... we need
Messenger on the machine.

Me too, until yesterday was fine and working no problem with version 8.1,
but today... Oh Surprise!!! New version needed and the new version does NOT
work on Server 2003.

Once again Microsoft has decided to force its users to "Upgrade?" to the
latest version of its software, and thus kicking many of us out of the
wagon!!!

MS... when will you change... and think of ALL your users before doing
something.

We are EXPECTING a correction to this problem SOON.

Re: Cant Sign In, Newer Version required

Greetings Arvin,

Hard to say if they'll fix this, as the previous block of Windows NT4 versions has never been
undone.

See the following link for workarounds:

Re: Cant Sign In, Newer Version required

Second solution works on Windows Server 2003. Compatibility mode solution
didn't. Thanks.

RE: Cant Sign In, Newer Version required

I also can't use msn anymore... -.-

Yesterday everything went fine, but now I MUST upgrade.
If you click no it simply brings you back to the inlog screen, and nothing
has changed...

And I can't upgrade.
My computer is good enough to use it, but when I download it it says my
computer can't instal it... :S

I've tried downloading older versions, it doesn't work...
And the newest can't be downloaded on my computer.

Why can't we just use 8.1?

RE: Cant Sign In, Newer Version required

Yup, me too. I used the first option that Jonathan Kay posted and it works
fine.

I must say, the worst part about this is that the Windows Live Team doesn't
seem to understand that they need to tell us what our "official" option is.
Instead they're just turning their back to us when we ask the questions.

Excuse me? WLT - What did you expect all us XP x64 users to do? Go around
looking for hacked up versions of your software? Download patches to make it
work... or really, did you just expect that we would all give up and say "oh
well... I guess it's ok I don't get Messenger, it's just a toy, right?"

It's not a toy - it's a communications device. It came with windows - I
expect it to continue to function... but you won't let it, you FORCE me to
upgrade, but won't let me upgrade, but you won't let me use it without
upgrading, but I can't upgrade.

The online help is the same way... I'd like to find out what the problem is,
and no where does it say XP x64 will be left out, the links all work until
you actually try and install. There is one blurb about how 32 bit only is
supported, but no options for the 64 bit? OK, find, so I search the heap,
and it's a friggin round robbin, ending up always at the same damn place...
the page that says after Aug 26th we're forced to upgrade. BTW, the only
references I could find say that x64 shouldn't be included in the mandatory
upgrade, which is, OBVIOUSLY, not true.

Fix this BS! PLEASE!!

WHAT IS THE WINDOWS LIVE TEAM'S OFFICIAL SOLUTION FOR XP x64 USERS?! thanks
to whoever can find and post a link to what they think we're supposed to
do... especially if it actually says something other than the tiny bit
they're willing to share.

RE: Cant Sign In, Newer Version required

Use Compatibility Mode Properties, it works for my version 8.1.0178.00 on
Windows 2003 Server:

1. Log on as Administrator.
2. Right-click the "Windows Live Messenger" shortcut, and then click
Properties.
3. Click the Compatibility tab.
4. Click to select the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" check
box to turn on compatibility-mode support for the program.
5. Click "Windows XP" compatibility mode in the drop-down box.
6. Click OK to save the changes.
7. Double-click the shortcut to run the program.

Re: Cant Sign In, Newer Version required

Miracles do exist!!!!

Today, Messenger signs in without any prompt to upgrade or watever...

Now, I will not even TRY to understand what MS tried to do here...
So, it seems today, it's no more COMPULSORY to upgrade!! Why? How? What
Happened?

All in the day of using MS products!!
