Re: latest msi

Not so fast.

Installing on W2K3 is fine with the exception of the Enterprise and also Enterprise
R2 versions. For it to work in those versions you need to put your server into DC
mode. AD will not recognize it as a valid program

Why on earth would you want to run live messenger on a server based system. Help me
understand

Re: latest msi

Not everyone uses W2k3 as a server and a server only. For a while I ran a
half-life server on it, and I created an MSN account for my server and ran
it on the same machine. I'm sure I could come up with more reasons why
someone would run live messenger on a server based system. Out there in the
real world we do all kinds of strange and screwy stuff. If it works, it
works

Re: latest msi

I've just successful installed windows live messenger 09 on my server 03 standard. Although, I am amazed that you have to install all these additional things just to get messenger working. Check out this list "Microsoft Application Error Reporting (32-bit) or Microsoft Application Error Reporting (64-bit), Microsoft Visual Studio Runtime, Windows Live Communications Platform, Segoe UI Font".

I was actually able to find the msi on a few websites, but they did not instruct me on installing the other things, so I kept installing it, then when I loaded it, it would not run.

There's quite a few people out there who use server 03 on their home computers. It is better than XP.

This is a tad OT, but I was using it to run three half-life servers on an
older Sempron 2400+. 1GB of memory. Found that server 03 apparently has too
much overhead for slower processors. As the three processes started
consuming more and more cpu, the cpu consumption would rise
disproportionally. Each server, fully loaded, only requires 10-15% cpu, but
running all three at the same time would max out cpu with partial loads. I
suspect the cpu scheduler is not efficient enough for this slower processor
and the context switches were taking too much time. Unlike Linux, you can't
choose a cpu scheduler - you are stuck with what Microsoft thinks you want.
I may be way off track, but I removed server 2003 and installed Win2000,
problem solved. I can run three servers with the expected amount of cpu
consumption.

We runn 2003 Terminal Server thru-out our company and we used Live Messenger
a lot. Not any more. MS killed the new version's ability to install in that
environment with absolutly no warning or explanation. Here I am a couple of
months later, still without messenger for my users or an explantion from MS.
