sent Links

a while ago my contacts started sending me Links

random links like ' is that really you' with a link
or 'check this out' with a link

i was told those links r some kinda viruses.. how do i avoid that?
and a friend of mine was once using my laptop n clicked one of those links.. m useing free AVG, i scanned n nothin showed up .. how can i make sure nothin happened to my set when he clicked it?
