| | Has Windows Live Messenger 8.5 been blocked from service? Does anyone know, Has Windows Live Messenger 8.5 been blocked from the Windows Live service? I have a Dell Dimension E521 AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ XP Media Center Edition updated to SP3, just reinstalled with all updates as of a few days ago 3.0 GB RAM I have used WLM8.5 for a while now, have to use ver. 14.xxx, several times, but the audio and video function would fail after 5 mins, or would not start at all. Rolled back to ver.8.5 to get the functions to work again. Under Add/Remove Windows Components, I have the check box for Windows Messenger unchecked. I have tried having it checked or not check, and still no change. Starting yesterday, WLM8.5 would run, because I would see it in the Task Manager as running, but the program would not launch. Contact Window would not appear. After a weekend of a lot of Windows Live Messenger Not Available Errors. As for the audio and video problems, I have friends using WLM vers.14 using both XP SP3 (32bit), and Vista (64bit). And the only way we could stay connectected, was if I was running WLM8.5, while they were running the newer versions of the program. Every time I upgraded to 14.xxx.206 or the current version 14, the problems would return. -- Add MS to your News Reader: news://msnews.microsoft.com Rich/rerat (RRR News) <message rule> <<Previous Text Snipped to Save Bandwidth When Appropriate>> |

| | Re: Has Windows Live Messenger 8.5 been blocked from service? Greetings, No, it's not blocked. If it is, you'll be prompted to upgrade but otherwise it'll display normally. The Windows Messenger checkbox is for Windows Messenger (not Live) and has very little affect on Windows Live Messenger as it just disables (not removes) it. Firstly, if you're using a router, 8.5 has a nasty bug where in some cases it will simply refuse to work depending on what the router is broadcasting (UPnP-wise). In most cases you can solve this by simply power cycling the router, rebooting the machine and trying again. If that doesn't work, what I would suggest you do is use System Restore in Windows to return to before the problem occurred if possible, as localizing this will be difficult here on the newsgroup. You can find System Restore by clicking Start, then Help & Support, and then 'Undo changes to this computer using System Restore'. -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2009 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "Rich/rerat" <rrr_news@newsgroup> wrote in message news:uNGsv#mRKHA.1792@newsgroup Quote: > Does anyone know, > > Has Windows Live Messenger 8.5 been blocked from the Windows Live service? > > I have a Dell Dimension E521 > AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ > XP Media Center Edition updated to SP3, just reinstalled with all updates as > of a few days ago > 3.0 GB RAM > > I have used WLM8.5 for a while now, have to use ver. 14.xxx, several times, > but the audio and video function would fail after 5 mins, or would not start > at all.
