Live Messenger in Windows 2003 Terminal Server

A couple of months back Live Messenger forced an upgrade on our Windows 2003
Terminal Server because the old version stopped being funtional. So we
upgraded. The new version says it does not support the Windows 2003
operating system. We are screwed. We had come to rely on using Windows Live
Messenger for our Terminal Server users. I can not find one single anser as
to why this is no longer supported in this environment or if there is a
version due out to support this environment. Does anyone know? Come on
Microsoft.. don't be afraid to let us know!

Re: Live Messenger in Windows 2003 Terminal Server

Greetings Eric,

Windows Live Messenger 2009 isn't supported on Windows Server below 2008. Why? Who knows.

However, you can install it yourself manually by just installing the necessary MSIs and
dependencies. You can find these at my blog here:

Doesn't work even aftet manual intallation

On a 2003 Server Standard with Terminal Server I installed Live Messenger manually

When I try to login (doesn't matter from which kind of session, console nor regular RDP) a window pops up with the following message:
"We can't sign you in to Windows Live Messnger"
Error Code:80040154
