Vista - Incomplete installation

Incomplete installation

Logging in to Live Messenger earlier I was informed that a "new" version was
available and so I clicked to initiate the download.

Sadly it did not complete - getting to the point of installing Messenger
after installing the other stuff it began to "roll back".

Is there anyway to download the individual installation files - i.e. for
photo gallery and messenger, etc. - without having to download the
comprehensive package?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Incomplete installation

Jonathan, I believe you've been of great help to me in the past on this
subject - it seems very odd that Microsoft do not offer these installer
packages as individual downloads, especially as it is never apparent which
component is the cause of the installation failure if / when it happens.

I've downloaded all the packages necessary to install Messenger
14.0.8089.726 - and think that I may have some elements installed already,
but will go through theprocess again to ensure I'm right. Presumably it
isn't important which order they're installed in - except that Messenger.msi
ought to be the last thing to install?

Once I've cracked that I'll return to your ecellent site to see what I can
do with the other downloads that I'm keen to get up to date with.

Many thanks.

Re: Incomplete installation

Hi Steve,

Glad I could be helpful. There is actually a Windows Live Installer log which should say
what's failing, although it's far easier just to install the things yourself and see.

And nope, the order doesn't matter. You can install them in any order, Messenger.msi first
if you like. I know throughout testing these things over and over that I've installed them
in all sorts of different combinations.

Re: Incomplete installation

OK, thanks again.

If I have any problems with other elements of the Windows Live stuff I know
exactly who to go to!

Re: Incomplete installation

Just a brief report back to say that Live Messenger seems to now be
updated - thanks for your excellent advice!

However, having moved on to Photo Gallery, I've encountered a problem. All
relevant elements downloaded OK - I didn't bother with the ones I'd already
installed as part of getting Messenger up to date.

When installing PhotoLibrary.msi I encountered an error message that
C:\Windows\Installer\PhotoLibrary.msi could not be read. I checked to see
where that file was and found it was not on my system. I copied the file I
had downloaded into the Installer directory - but that only brought up other
error messages!

Seems like I might never have had PhotoGallery on my system in the first
place! What have I done wrong this time?
