Vista - messenger crashes as soon as i try to chat

What I feared has come true. I was required to install the newest
version of live messenger today.
I have tried the newest version several times earlier this year and
every time it has been the same. As soon as I click a person to start
a chat or when someone else invites me to a chat msn crashes.
Previously I reinstalled 8.5 but it seems that wont work anymore.
Today I first did a complete uninstall of all live stuff and also ran
a cleanup tool to remove leftover msn files and registry entries
restarted and did a new install of messenger but it didn't help, just
as in the past it crashes as soon as I start a chat. Repair installs
haven't worked either in the past.
Is there any known problem or solution for this or is there something
I could try to do? Searching I couldn't find anything that looked
relevant.

I am on Vista home premium 32.
