OneCare renewal

Just wondering but what happens if I didn't renew my OneCare subscription.
Will it still work and not pick up the updates or will it just not work and
also if I bought a new boxed version of OneCare (as its cheaper than
renewing on line with Microsoft) will I still be able to uninstall the old
one and install the new one?

Regards

Re: OneCare renewal

That's what I was wondering.
It's cheaper to just go out and buy a whole new copy than re-subscribing!
Anyone know?

You can renew at any time using a retail key from inside the box by signing in
at http://billing.microsoft.com and clicking renew, then selecting the option to
renew with a PIN or Token, which is the 25 character key.
If you choose to not renew, and didn't provide payment information when you
subscribed originally, it will expire and stop downloading updates. Also, you
won't be able to run tune-up, backup, or use other features in OneCare after it
expires, though there is a grace period after expiration of about 30 days before
it goes into reduced functionality mode. You will still have protection, but it
will be less valid as time goes on without updates.

Re: OneCare renewal

That wasn't quite was I was after. I meant that if I uninstall the existing
One Care, could I purchase a new version from a high street shop and then
install that version. The high street shops are almost £10 cheaper than
doing it online with Microsoft.

Re: OneCare renewal

You don't need to uninstall the current installation of OneCare as it is a
subscription. You can renew with the retail key at the Billing site.
What you get in the retail box is a CD with the installer that goes online to
get the latest bits and a retail key to activate with.
If your current subscription expires before you renew, OneCare on the PC will
stop updating about 30 days after expiration. However, once you enter the new
key on the Billing site from your retail box copy, it will re-activate OneCare
on the PC and it will go back to green.
The only reasons to reinstall OneCare after getting the new box copy -
1. You want to use a different LiveID for the new subscription
2. OneCare does not reflect the status of your renewal after 24 hours.

Re: OneCare renewal

Great question.

Microsoft wants 49.95 to continue my subscription. I just picked up a copy
at Office Max for 19.95.

I plan on letting my current version (which is 2.0) expire, then uninstall.
I will then install the version I bought.

Don't know why this will not work.

I asked Microsoft for a beta tester discount, but they will only discount
one time. Sorta takes away my initiative to beta more. But oh well.....

Re: OneCare renewal

Stephen,

Sorry to sound dense but I need to also get clear on this. I have until June
with my current subscription- if at that time, I can find OneCare cheaper in
a store than the resubscribe cost direct from MS- you're saying that it's
not necessary to uninstall- simply run the installer on the CD and use my
current LiveID and all will be well? The installer will do the update?

Let's say I run the installer from a commercial CD a few days before my
current subscription runs out- the installation will simply add one year to
the current subscription or it will go one year from the moment I run the
installer? If that's the case, then it makes sense to run it the day the
current subscription runs out? Or, I can take advantage of that 30 days- so
I should wait until the end of that period?

thanks,
Joe

Re: OneCare renewal

Asking for clarification is fine.
No. Running the installer will produce an error that states that OneCare is
already installed.
If you have an active subscription right now you can sign in at
http://billing.microsoft.com with the LiveID for your subscription and renew
OneCare with a PIN - the token or retail product key from the package.
You do not need to wait for expiration or the renewal prompt and it will extend
your subscription for 12 months past the original expiration.

Re: OneCare renewal

Go to http://billing.microsoft.com and sign in with your subscription LiveID.
(Open OneCare and click help/about to view the subscription LiveID)
Select the OneCare subscription and click on the renew link.
Choose the option to renew with a prepaid PIN or token which is the retail
product key.
Enter the 25 character key and proceed.
It can take up to 24 hours for the subscription status to be updated in OneCare.
