All just marketing fluff or is it really that good?

Ok, i've always believed that if something seems too good to be true it
generally is too good to be true.

After reading about OneCare and trying out the free online web scanner I was
pleasantly surprised. I would like to know, from the people out there
running Vista with scores of below 4 on their performance rating system,
what OneCare does to their systems?

Traditionally antivirus has had a major affect on system performance
especially when combined with spyware detection, adware detection, firewall,
etc. Now that said obviously Microsoft know how their OS works and would
have developed something which is good for their OS, but I want to know what
the community says AND is it really worth the 38 quid the vendors want for
it?

Kind regards
Richard

The full PC version of OneCare is actually pretty light on resources compared to
the other suites available. There's a free 90 day trial - give it a try.
You will need to remove all other real time protection programs and services
before installing.

Well, my windows score is above 4- but you might like to check a large
forum dedicated to the program at
http://forums.microsoft.com/windowso....aspx?siteid=2 for views
by others.

The program has its problems but all AV suite programs do.

Re: All just marketing fluff or is it really that good?

Richard,

Please forgive the late response.

On other computers I had been using Norton. Going back a bit, to the days
of DOS and Win3.1, Norton had a good product. Then Symantec got their
hands on it and it has been going to pot in a hurry! Talk about a system
hog! Lateley, Symantec seems to have been listening to some of the
complaints because Norton 360 is not in your face as much as System Works
but it still hurts system performance.

The other thing is not even Symantec can *completely* remove System Works!
I tried, first using the Windows Add Remove Programs utility and thinking
that was it. Wrong! I kept getting dialogs popping up saying the Symantec
Updater was trying to run but could not find file whatever (I can't remember
the specifics of the filename). I went to the Symantec web presence and
discovered the Symantec Removal Tool to get rid of the dregs the Add Remove
utility had left behind. Even that didn't completly cleanse the system.
The upshot of all this is, I had to save all my data and reformat the HD to
FINALLY get rid of all the detritus left over from Symantec!

This computer, a homebrew job, will not see Symantec at all. If necessary,
I shall depend upon the firewall built into the mainboard and the one in the
router. Right now, I'm using Live OneCare. So far, there does not seem to
be such a huge performance hit as there was with Symantec. However, the
firewall blocker gets a bit annoying when you first install a new program
because, of course, the first thing a new program wants to do is "call home"
to see if there are any updates and the firewall detects this (a good thing,
I suppose).

The other pieces of OneCare seem to work OK. Of course, when the defragger
is running, you are going to see some slow down, but that goes away when the
defragger finishes (the time required depends upon the size of your HD(s)
and how much data you have).

Am I satisfied with OneCare? The jury is still out. I can't really answer
that because I have not been using it long enough.

Regards,

Turner

Dear Turner,

Just you wait.................
Let OneCare update itself and you'll tear your hair out.
Get rid of it now!

You made your point, Alex.
You encountered a problem, and I'm sorry about that. The 2.0 upgrade was shaky
and some people (a small minority) experienced problems. The patch to resolve
the 2.0 problems caused a few more problems for some people.
The vast majority of users did not experience problems with 2.0, although that
is little consolation for people who did experience problems, such as yourself.
For the record, I have 7 computers running OneCare here and *none* encountered
any problems with the upgrade.

Re: All just marketing fluff or is it really that good?

Thank you to everyone who replied. I used F-Secure, then symantec, then
trend for some time but it was just getting a little costly for the annual
subscription fee, hence my looking around. At the moment I am relying on my
router firewall, windows firewall, windows defendar and clamwin (a free
antivirus program) to keep my machine safe. So far so good.

I think I might get the 90 day trial and test it out. I do have 3 machines
to test with so I should get a pretty good feeling from this!

Thanks all!

Re: All just marketing fluff or is it really that good?

Now if only our society would catch a few of the bums who create these
problems and hang'em at dawn- we might reduce the problem. Think of the
billions of dollars of damage they cause us. I wonder how much is spent each
year on protection software?

Re: All just marketing fluff or is it really that good?

Hello. I've use Norton, McAfee, and Stop Sign. Only Stop Sign was as easy
on my system as Windows Live was, but Stop Sign let a virus through .
