I had OneCare v2 on my XP Pro laptop and when the annual renewal approached,
I decided to uninstall it and go to Norton 360. I uninstalled OneCare with the Remove Applications applet, but upon rebooting all (3) of my CD/DVD drives were unusable with Code 19 (corrupted registry). I finally did a System Restore to yesterday. The CD/DVD drives are working again. Now I have the (red) OneCare icon back on the tool bar, but it seems that all of its' services are off, since I have a large list of Urgent messages. How can I remove OneCare while retaining use of my CD/DVD drives. - Michael Faklis Michael_Faklis@xxxxxx |

Then use this script, http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_d...cd_dvd_fix.htm, to restore the drives to Windows Explorer. This problem happens in Windows with some burning software removal. -steve -- Stephen Boots MVP Windows Live Windows Live OneCare Forum Moderator sboots@xxxxxx |

I regret that the same problem happened on my Vista Ultimate machine. I ran
the script you referenced, even though it states it's for XP only. It didn't fix the problem. I couldn't do the System Restore on the Vista machine, because System Restore was mysteriously turned off and all of my restore points were gone. I know System Restore was on last week. When I uninstall the drives/drivers, the "Found New Hardware" just brings them back with Code 19. How can I get my CD/DVD drives back from Code 19 land? - Michael Faklis "StephenB" <sboots@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:4h04s3pgtajmmmfvaa30hbr9s54m3rl3pu@xxxxxx

That is particularly troubling that you had this happen on two machines with
different operating systems. I don't know if Doug's script is meant to work on Vista, but it would appear not, since you were unable to solve the problem. Did you make sure to save the script and right click it and select Run as Administrator? What's common on these two machines? Any other CD/DVD burning software that existed pre-OneCare or was installed post-OneCare? Try the information here: http://www.randomfix.com/2007/04/12/...dvd-rom-drive/ -steve "Michael Faklis" <Michael_Faklis@xxxxxx> wrote:

They are actually the same computer. XP is on the primary drive, and Vista
is on the secondary drive. XP is my primary OS, since I will not cut over to Vista until I can get everything working. Sure I have disk burning software installed, ether prior to or after installing OneCare. In any case, OneCare should not corrupt my CD/DVD drives, making them Code 19 unusable. It should never have disabled system restore, but it did (I know that because the OneCare uninstall is the only thing I did on the machine after verifying I had restore points.). System Restore is how I recovered the CD/DVD drives on XP, but now I can't do that on Vista. I tried OneCare for the last year, only because Microsoft gave me a free copy. I've removed it because of all the times it hosed by system over the last year. I will verify "Run As Administrator" when I retry Doug's script. - Michael Faklis Michael_Faklis@xxxxxx "StephenB" <sboots@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:m71cs3le0l6v8bp942qc5und2cljvbh5vf@xxxxxx

"Run as Administrator" did it, Doug's script does work on Vista after all,
if run as administrator. - Michael Faklis "StephenB" <sboots@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:m71cs3le0l6v8bp942qc5und2cljvbh5vf@xxxxxx

Thanks for confirming, Michael.
Yes, I agree that OneCare uninstall should not cause this problem, but as you can see by Doug's page, where the script is hosted, this is not a OneCare problem, but a Windows problem - triggered by OneCare in these cases. I imagine that there may be an opportunity for the OneCare uninstall to be coded to avoid this problem, though. -steve "Michael Faklis" <Michael_Faklis@xxxxxx> wrote:
