I am planning to purchase a new Dell computer next month with Vista Business
and am trying to get an overall understanding of the various programs from MS that can be added to Vista. I probably will go with Windows Live Mail. However, I am having difficulty understanding what Windows Live OneCare will do for my new computer other than the Anti-Virus protection. As I understand it, Vista Business already comes with a firewall, malware, and backup and restore programs. I would very much appreciate an explanation for this Vista to be newbie owner as to what advantages Windows Live OneCare would provide to a computer. Also, would appreciate any comments as to how effective the Anti-Virus program in Windows Live OneCare is compared to third party programs such as NOD32, etc. Thanks, Sam. |

Windows Live OneCare will provide a full 2 way firewall, while the firewall in
Vista is configured as inbound protection only. OneCare includes antivirus as well as the protection afforded by the standard Windows Defender. Backup in Vista business is superior to OneCare backup in that you can do a full image backup and perform a "bare metal" restore in the event of a failure, while OneCare backup is more like the standard backup in the Vista Home versions, though a bit more configurable. It provides some monitoring of system settings and automatically schedules some of the tools already in Vista such as cleanup, defrag, and a check of Windows Updates for critical and important updates that have not yet been offered via Automatic Updates. With more than one PC on a subscription, you gain some additional functionality in the ability to define a hub for monitoring the status of OneCare on the other PCs, among other things. It is available for a 90 day free trial so you can check it out for yourself, if desired and remove it if it isn't to your liking. -steve "Sam" <samnewsgrp71@xxxxxx THISsbcglobal.net> wrote:

I've been using Windows Live OneCare since it was in beta. The biggest advantage is that you buy one license and you can use it on 3 PC's. Not only very effective, but affordable as well. And with a built in maintenance scheduler, the automation of weekly tasks is so much easier. I highly recommend it. |

"One Care is really bad on Vista. It duplicates lots of the functionality (eg backups) and just makes the whole Vista experience even more crappy and disappointing than it already is. OnceCare was designed for XP. It is a mess on Vista. |

I beg to differ as well. WLOC is working beautifully on 3 Vista machines in
my home as well. NO as in ZERO problems. Vista blows XP out of the water. "StephenB" <sboots@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:regh14l4isvijehkph3kaqjq9lgb1ctt04@xxxxxx
