OneCare Attention Alert

I prefer to have Vista notify me for available updates but
OneCare deems it necessary to warn me that this needs immediate
attention and the OneCare icon in the notification area on the
taskbar is, believe red. I hjave since uninstalled OnCare.
Anyway to prevent OneCare from doing this and allowing me to have
Vista notify me of updates without causing a panic??

Thanks,
James

James,

I also have Live OneCare and had the same issue. What I did, and what I recommend is that you set automatic updates to yes and specify what day of the week you want to have them installed. This will make Live OneCare happy but still give you control over what updates are actually installed. Just check the Windows Update page frequently so you can catch the update page before your selected day for auto install.

I hope this helps.

OneCare adds a layer to the check for updates done by Windows. Automatic Updates
for Windows are not deployed to everyone at the same time. What you are seeing
is that a PC that has not been offered a released critical update had a Tune-up
happen in OneCare. As part of Tune-up, OneCare check the Windows Update catalog
and warns if something has been found that was not yet offered. The tray icon
will be yellow in this situation, not red.
It *is* an extra added bit of security and can't be configured by you.

Re: OneCare Attention Alert

So, there are times when updates are available, critical or not,
but Vista doesn't notify me of the fact?

Re: OneCare Attention Alert

Yes, that's correct. Automatic Updates are not staged to everyone at the same
time. So, it is possible to not receive a notification of an update being
available or downloaded to your PC, but when you manually check for updates via
Windows Updates, you'll see one or more critical/important updates.
OneCare adds an extra check for these updates as part of Tune-up.

Re: OneCare Attention Alert

I've noticed that when I click view available updates, the critical one(s)
are checked and other(s) aren't. Those that aren't checked are triggering
the notification from OneCare?
Also, If I decide to try OneCare again, should I manually uninstall my
current
Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware software or will OneCare do it upon installation?
Can't remember the situation the last time.

Re: OneCare Attention Alert

If you see Critical or Important Updates available at Windows Update on a manual
visit, those are the ones OneCare sees. Checked and not checked isn't the issue.
You should manually reme the other a/v or spyware software before you install
OneCare.
