Windows Live One Care will not start

Hello,

LiveOne Care just stopped working - the icon disappeared completely
from the system tray.

I tried rebooting - OneCare does not load at reboot.

I tried starting manually using AdministrativeTools/Services - it
gives error message "Could not start the Windows Live OneCare service
on the Local Computer. Error 193:Oxc1

I tried a system restore - cannot restore to any previous restore
points.

I tried repairing Net2.0 (uninstall and reinistall) - did not help.

I tried uninstalling LiveOne Care - cannot uninstall.

I tried running the OneCare Malware repair tool - that runs through
but then cannot start OneCare at the end of the process.

Any other suggestions please?

Re: Windows Live One Care will not start

Further investigation suggests that I have got some really nasty
virus. I can't access any antivirus scanning pages, I can't run
Hijackthis (Win32 error), Ican't run Spybot (same error), I can't
start in safemode. I managed to uninstall OneCare, and then installed
Alwil anti-virus - but that wouldn't start either. I have googled a
lot and it seems that the only solution to this is a complete
reformat.

I'm fairly sure I know where the virus came from - oddly enough I
transferred it from another PC that runs Alwil - and that did not pick
it up either.

Before you take a run at formatting....

did not detect or cannot remove the malware, please contact support to report
this and for help with removal.

Re: Windows Live One Care will not start

I've googled this a lot - there are a lot of people out there who have
been hit with this. Microsoft appears to have no solution. This has
convinced me to get a differnet platform next time I change computer.
I'm fed up with spending so much time just trying to keep a PC in one
piece.
