I downloaded the patch and did the install but it says it needs another
part of the patch to work. It went partway through the install but
halted.

Sorry, I don't know what the answer is...all I had
to do to install the .msp file was to left click it.

Maybe the following article will offer some ideas:

(943144) Updates are not installed successfully
from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update,
or by using Automatic Updates after you repair
a Windows XP installation
