Vista Media Centre won't play most of my movies

Someone please help. I have had this new HP vista media centre computer for 2 weeks, and can't get Media Centre to play 1/2 the 500 gb worth of movies that my old XP media Centre played without any trouble at all! Some are MPEG-4, others are div-x, some are Dvd format.
I have seen others with similar posts in other forums and I have loaded up all the lates codecs (safe one) from Divx, and ffdshow etc...
I have to play all my movies with Nero or Media Player, which both have no issues with. I feel like this is a dud, and can't believe that a full hard recovery is worth the trouble.

Anyone with any help would be really appreciated!

Hi

I use a utility called My Movies 2 [http://www.mymovies.dk/home.aspx] which sorted out all of my problems.

Re: Vista Media Centre won't pkay most of my movies

Thanks, but I have downloaded codecs from all the reputable sites one by one, and no go. Its funny because Media Player and my Nero worked fine right from the start. of course after a divx codec download for those that needed it.
So Media Centre has some problem seeing thumbnails and finding codecs. It is so frustrating because my xp media centre, although it was sometimes slow finding my 2000 or so songs worked like a charm, and all my divx, avi, mpeg4, and dvd's played great.
This Media Centre on Vista is crap! I am so upset!

Stick with VMC, it will be worth it once you have sorted out this problem.

Did you try MyMovies 2?

Re: Vista Media Centre won't play most of my movies

I had exactly the same problem. When I played the file in Windows Media Player (WMP) it was fine, but when I played it in Media Center it didn't work. Media Center uses WMP to play it's files, so why didn't they play. It turns out that if you run WMP standalone it runs the 32-bit version whereas Media Center uses the 64-bit version.

I tried lots of codes as suggested on the web including the vista codecs pack. None, worked, however installing the 64-bit k-lite codec pack did, K-Lite Codec Pack 64-bit. Hopefully this will sort your problem.

Note, after choosing your mirror make sure you click on the correct download link as one of the links is an advertisement.

Re: Vista Media Centre won't play most of my movies

Sorry to here you cant use your media center.
I use mine for everything and could not live with out it.

So I am going to recommend,
First:
Uninstall all of your codices and restart.
Second:
Install these
Welcome to the Media Control Plugin Site
SourceForge.net: ffdshow tryouts: Files
MajorGeeks.Com - Contacting Download Site

And if you are using Vista x64 then you must install the x64 codices as well as the x32 codices.
Because the x64 Media Center is x64 Native

Here are the links for x64
http://www.start64.com/index.php?opt...2238&Itemid=72
http://www.majorgeeks.com/

And remember x32 Vista only gets x32 codices
and x64 Vista gets x32&x64 Codices

I hope this gets you going.
