Record/Watch

This may be a question that gets asked a lot but I can't seem to find the answer. Is it possible to record one show while watching something else entirely? I have looked at dual tuners n such but they don't specify if this is possible. I started thinking maybe its a Media Center thing... If this is possible, can anyone reccomend a PCI tuner card that would give me this ability?

Re: Record/Watch

Cool, UKMedia.. thanks for the reply.

I read through the thread and it seems that there are a number of card that claim to do what I want to. Yet, there seems to be nothing but problems with them all. Is it just not possible to have a TRUE dual tuner in a pc yet? ...meaning one that will record one channel while watching another..

Re: Record/Watch

thanks for the reply!

Are you using Windows Media Center to do all this? If so, how is that set up? Can WMC detect more than one tuner?

Re: Record/Watch

i use mediaportal

yes it can if you have the new tv pack for vista it will let you setup 4 tuners the standard media centre lets you setup two and then you need to do some fiddling to get it to use more than two

mediaportal lets you share the tuners with other puters on your network so you can watch and record from the other puters

cheers brad

Re: Record/Watch

Ok, so I am a newb at all this. I am still a bit confused and I thank you for your patience...

I understand what you were saying about 4 tuners and all..

Im still a bit confused on what i actually bought..

Newegg.com - Hauppauge WINTVHVR1600 DUAL Tuner 1183 PCI Interface - TV Tuners & Video Devices

Thats the card I bought. I had two ideas about what I thought i was getting and what I actually got. I thought this card would allow me to do exactly what you are doing, chinga69. I thought this is a dual tuner... but apperntly it isnt.

I also assumed that I would be able to get over the air Hi Def and watch it in High Def on my pc... apparently not.

Is there a way to watch high def stuff without the need for a set top box? I dont know what all the acronyms are for.. NTSC and QAM and all this stuff... i dont know what those are...

So, here is what I would like to be able to do..

Id like to be able to call up my local cable provider and tell them I want all 300 channels they offer with all the hi def movies and sports channels.. their biggest package...

I want to be able to take my coax from the wall and plug it right into the back of my pc and be able to see all of those channels in my windows media center on screen guide..

Then i wana be able to watch one show while i record something else

Is this possible without having that darn set-top box? The idea behind having the PC do everything is to eliminate the set-top box...

Hi

You can achieve what you want with out a set top box. Have a look here, ignore the middle bits as it gets emmotional but there is some good info in between!!

The Green Button - Why Is HD such an issue?? (confused Canadian Newbie)
