no, just install the new codecs over the old ones, these codecs WILL play anything you throw at them.

Re: i can't play any movie on Windows Media.

MR NEEDS will the codec link you posted work on 64 bit vista home premium? is it a "clean" download will it allow me to play .AVI files? and will it invalidate my warranty with microsoft if i install it on my new pc? if so do you know how i can get hold of a genuine codec for wmp 11 so i can play .AVI files?
Thanks

Re: i can't play any movie on Windows Media.

.AVI is just an extension. it's a 'container' file.

Basically a container is a certain structure file that contains an audio, video and optional subtitle stream(s) and timesyncs these.

So video1.AVI might require different codecs to be able to play it than, say for instance, video2.AVI. If they contain different datastreams that is.

If you want to be able to play 'most' .avi files I would suggest getting that K-lite codec pack that MrNeeds linked to. I've used it before and it's a good pack containing codecs for almost all everyday-use datastreams.

Another noteworthy mention would be to get the ACE Mega Codec Pack:
Free-Codecs.com :: Download ACE Mega CodecS Pack 6.03 - Professional Edition : This is the lastest and greatest release of famous ACE Mega CoDecS Pack

I'm not sure if they've kept it updated (because I don't use it anymore) but it used to be the best, biggest and most comprehensive codec/filter pack out there!
(note: may cause codec/player conflicts if configured incorrectly, customisation only advisable after reading guide/faq or if you are certain you know what you're doing)

Another option would be to ditch Windows Media Player alltogether and just go for another media player, in which case I would suggest using Media Player Classic:
Free-Codecs.com :: Download Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1 : Media Player Classic is an enhanced version of Media Player 6.4
If you download this you won't have to install ANY codec packs EVER.

PS.
in regard to your question of compatability with vista:
it won't be an issue with any of my suggestions nor mrneed's.

Re: i can't play any movie on Windows Media.

Ayporos :- Is the k-lite codecs pack a "clean" download? all the explanation of 'container' files went straight over my head all i want is a way of playing my video files using wmp11 as i can't currently as for the pressumably shareware/freeware player you advertise personally i prefer to try and steer clear as i have heard most shareware/freeware contain loads of junk that bogs down your computer i have all that on my other desktop machine which is an old pentium 4 3.2 running windows xp sp3 i am just trying to find something i can use easily with my quad core 64 bit vista machine and my 32 bit dual core vista laptop also the tweaking i have no idea how to do so perhaps the klite pack isnt for me...
thanks anyway for your reply...

Re: i can't play any movie on Windows Media.

if you want to be able to 'just play' stuff on Windows Media Player
I am afraid you WILL have to download a codec pack like K-lite.

However for least hassle you'd be best off downloading the Media Player Classic that I linked to in my previous post.
It is a stand-alone single .exe file download that doesnt install anything, doesnt alter any registry values and is COMPLETELY free of 'junk' or stuff that 'boggs down your computer'.

Actually WMP is much more full of such 'junk' than media player classic.

You have to keep in mind WMP is created by Microsoft as a PRODUCT, and built to interact with windows, make all sorts of libraries for your multimedia files, scan your computer for such files, create databases and even connect to the web with built-in browsing software to automatically download and update information on your multimedia like artist, titles, 'rating', albums etc.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that WMP is in fact exactly what you claim you 'don't want' to use.

Please give Media Player Classic a shot, its the most pure and nonsense-free multimedia playback software out there.

Re: i can't play any movie on Windows Media.

FLV is a nice player for certain files (flash mostly tbh) but it's supported filetype list isn't that big, MPC would be a better overall solution.

The OP did state he was trying to play .avi files, so I wonder why you suggested FLV?
