| Vista Home Premium 32 bit | Blue Ray drive question please I just decided to dive into the Blue Ray world. I got a player for me sony bravia. So... I have a open slot for another optical drive on my desktop and was wondering if I can install a blue ray reader and writer instead of a dvd\cd drive. I would like to backup some of the blue ray disc's that I have and perhaps watch the blue ray movies on my computing machine. I assume that the blue ray disc's content is much more dense then a dvd and stores much more data. I have DVD Fab 6. Can I get a blue ray drive to install on my desktop that will read and write? and does it depend on the system board as to what type I need to get? My alienware mobile desktop also has an available periphial for another drive and I would like to install one on the desktop and the laptop. My desktop: Emachines W5233 Intel® Pentium® D Processor 925 (Dual Core) 1 64-bit technology support with Intel® EM64T Technology (3.0GHz | 2 x 2MB L2 Cache | 800MHz FSB) Optical drive info: 16x DVD±R/RW SuperMulti Drive Up to 8.5GB with dual layer media Write max: 16x DVD±R, 8x DVD+R DL, 6x DVD-R DL, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 12x DVD-RAM, 48x CD-R, 32x CD-RW Read max: 12x DVD-ROM, 12x DVD-RAM, 48x CD-ROM If I can get past this then I'll work on doing the same to my alienware laptop. Any help is appreciated. Greg |

| Vista Ultimate x64 sp2, Solaris x64 | Re: Blue Ray drive question please Hello Greg, I've got for you two links on the E-bay to Blue-Ray drives. The Panasonic Blue-Ray Burner Internal Desktop drive and PIONEER-BD-DVD-BLUE-RAY drive. This last one is a little too expensive, I suppose. These two drives you can swap into your desktop instead of your current drive or just add to the present one if you have the free bay. You can always get the external USB-DVD-RW burner drive and use it on both your computers. In addition to the Blue Ray drive you will have to get the Cyberlink PowerDVD9 software to play the Blue Ray discs. There are other applications as well, prehaps even free ones, but the power DVD8 or Power DVD9 are the ones of the best. Btw, this Sony Bravia is the TV set, right? Hope I could help you somehow. Cheers... |

| Vista Home Premium 32 bit | Re: Blue Ray drive question please Ok man! thanks. So here goes another learning process. I guess I should assume that the Blue Ray drive will read everything else like CD R and RW data disc's. Are there gonna be blue ray blank media on the market? I noticed at CVS they had some DVD 9 dual layer blanks. Appreciate the input. Greg |

| Vista Ultimate x64 sp2, Solaris x64 | Re: Blue Ray drive question please Hi Greg, Yes, the Blue-Ray burner can read and write Blue discs, DVD, DVD Double Layer and CD discs as well as the mini DVD and CD discs without problem, the same as the regular CD/DVD drive. You can buy the blank Blue-Ray discs on the E-bay or Amazon. Here you can find them: Sony blu ray blank disc BD-R blueray 25GB 4X bluray, blank-blue-ray-discs and Verbatim Recordable-Blu-Ray-10- Dual Layer Discs. I think you can buy them at the computer stores, too..The blanks are still rather expensive when you compare them to the standard DVD or CD discs. Cheers... |
