Re: no video in windows media player

Having the same issue with Vista Biz thru - SP2 - that's why i'm here actually right now, to ask the same question.

I'll let you go first nanders... I'm sure my situation may be a tad different than yours and i don't want to hijack your thread till you get a solution.

Perhaps your solution will work for me too.

Re: no video in windows media player

Hello to both of you,
It sounds like a codec problem, here are a couple of links, although you may already have these codecs, you will have to re-install them. Try these and post your results. Good luck.

Re: no video in windows media player

Thanx stoney-nuts for the reply.

As for my situation - no the codes did not resolve the final issue i'm having.

My particualar issue started with WINMP-11 couldn't play the file due to codecs not installed though winvista biz is supposed to come with them.

so i installed Klite basic and that took care of the codec issue - BUT....

sound is still choppy - and so is video - video is real choppy and hangs when playing a HD wmv...

Insert commercial DVD and it states it cannot play the inserted disk and asks me to atttempt to lower the REZ of my comp and try again.

I've run a GPU test it's fine
Tested the Memory - fine and it's new
My comp has been upgraded with PC2-5300 memsticks and
i ran a test on my DVD drive.

results are here: Photo 1 and Photo 2
the error shown is from too much info on the cd from what i understood - unless i'm wrong about that.

What nanders issue is...??? Did the Codec install solve your problem nanders?

Re: no video in windows media player

Hello SonyVGNSZ460N,

Here is the obvious question, are all your drivers up to date ?.
Also try turning off your virus scanner, and as many background services as you can, you need to see if there is anything hogging the resources.
Type msconfig in the search bar, go to startup and see what is running there, turn as much off as possible.
You can open WMP and go to options, open the performance tab and under DVD and Video playback try checking the Drop frames box.
Give this a try and post your results.
Good luck.

Re: no video in windows media player

Will do stoneys-nuts

as far as the Drivers yeah - this is a fresh install with a fresh install of Vista sp1 and sp2 - drivers were all updated few days ago.

My system restore was a nightmare and i'm having to pretty much fix everything manually - maybe a hardware issue some where that i haven't found yet.

But as stated - i'm new to vista - and kinda fumbling my way disovering where things have been put or how to access them settings etc etc.

Xp i can find more - but i'm getting there as i work on this comp
jsut fixed another issue i was having after the SP2 install.

As far as the processes running - too many as far as i'm concerned - i noticed this right off - after boot up and the machine settles down - 63 processes.

I've turned off some start up stuff a little bit ago - i think it's down to 57. Quite abiot different than my xP machine - where i ahve only 23max or 17min when tweaked out.

I don't know what the norm is for vista let alone sony/vista Business.

As for the Virus protection - i pulled that first thing - it was a notons 2007 trial - total hog. yanked it first thing. adn ran a Nortons romoval tool - from norton to get rid of the remnants.

post findings of your request when completed

thanx

EDIT

Okay stoneys-nutz - got some findings for you

I shut every thing except one thing off in my start up ecept my finger print password thingy - (it's too cool and i want to be able to log in)
- shutting down everything else not really knowing what they are - hope that is a good thing
but i'm in the middle of checking the old drive that was in the comp so i haven't done a restart yet.

Did go into the WMP Options -> Preformance - tried the drop frames to keep vid and audio in syc. was still choppy but better.
then played around abit with settings - turned off the use DirectX accelerator for wmv's and smooth video - that worked with dropp frames unchecked

went back again and checked use DirectX accellerater (sp) and still it was good - in full screen (1080 HD wmv)

but my thought here is - the wmv is loaded into memory now - i'll have to re-check later.

Put in a DVD - still the same - "WMP cannot play DVD video. Please try resetting your screen resolution... blah blah blah.

Now understand - this comp is powerful enough to play anything - shouldhave noproblems handling any thing i through at it right now - there really is nothing in it app wise. Quick books free mini version - trial of Carel PSP 11 and sony vaio stuff and Vista Business

This is a 2ghz duo core with 2 g's of ram 7200rpm drive and the partion is only 146gigs compared to the original at 160 which was a 5400rpm HD and the new mem is upgraded too to 667mhz - it should fly though these vids.
and should play DVD now that - i don't know about why that is coming up... nevre saw that before on any of my xp machines.

so what do you think?

Re: no video in windows media player

I think i may have the answer stoneys-nutz

could be a conflicting codec - so i'm going to un-install my codec pack one more time and re-install.

second - Vista Business is suppose to come with the codec and my comp did hang at WinDVD install and never completed it so i'm minus that - which contaisn the needed codec for DVD's.
KLite also contatins the codec as well as others

also i found this :
Windows Media Player 11 for Vista and codecs

and this:
Supported software MPeg-2 DVD in WMP for WinXP and Vista

at the Microsoft support site. The last one tells how to detect a DVD de-coder upgrade and how to detet the ones you have on your machine.

let me try that and see if i can get it to play DVD's

as for the bogging down and being choppy - got to be a resource using something up somewhere as you menitoned.

cpu is showing no signs of use - memory does at times though...

Re: no video in windows media player

Another thing you could try is another player, there are lots to choose from, but for your purposes, all you need is a simple one so you can eliminate any hardware problems.
Heres a link to one.
Good work so far though.

Re: no video in windows media player

My problem, no video in WMP, was solved installing the video codec from K-Lite Codec Pack.
Clearly a Vista problem, since the media center had no trouble producing audio +video.

Another problem:
Media center can not find any tv stations.
I installed a Terratec tv card that is supposed to be suitable for vista, and the Terra Tec software works ok. It found all stations.
So why should media center have a problem doing the same thing?

Re: no video in windows media player

nanders - on the MS site about WMP 11 - only ultimate comes with the codecs to play DVD. MS want to sell you the codec pac - i believe for $15.00 at this time.

IMO MS needs to rethink their marketing stratagy on this - it's jst going ot piss people off and they come out looking like what they are actualling doing - nickel diming people on this... everyone that has WMP11 is unhappy about it.

pesonally i had to go a step further - the Klite install didn't work for me for DVD's, so i had to install a different codec pac by Shark - Vista Codec Pac
- but first had to install Win 2008 C++ to install that ( VCP contains ffd show or fdd show?) which requires C++. Though WMP works for me now for DVD's... i'm real disapointed in MS on this for sure. and considering pulling it an jsut leaving an older version for apps to use. If they're going ot give an incomplete Media Player - don't need it. rather yank it and use another that comes complete for all media.

Why your Media Center is having the issue not sure - haven't check mine to see if it works yet - but will.
