CODEC issues - No sound on live TV and recorded TV

After 6 good months where everything worked just fine, I have now lost the sound on Live TV in windows media center, and there is no sound when I playback recorded TV in Media Center.

In addition I have the following observations:

No "introduction sound" - when media center starts.
No sound when I try "Configuration of speakers" in Media Center
Sound works fine when playing music
Sound works fine when playing the recorded TV programs in Media player - in other words, the files are intacts - it is just Media Center that does not work

Based on the above I assume taht I have problems with my CODECS. Problem is - I have no clue how to fix it!

Where do I go from here?

First step un-install every codec pack yu have added. Check and see if problem goes away. If it does just add the absolute minimum number of codecs (not packs) that you need to get all type of media working. Or you could use a player htat will play them without additional codecs likE VLC

Can you guide me on how to do this? I have never myself installed any additional CODEC packs - so not sure where/how to uninstall.

Media center and media player use the same codec sources on your system. If it works in media player, a codec problem is very unlikely. My guess is that some media center file got corrupted. You can run SFC /SCANNOW in cmd (open as admin). Maybe it can fix it.

KF

Whs is correct if you haven't installed any codec's then only the ones internal to vista are installed. try wha suggestion of running the system file checker (sfc /scannow).

Let us know how it works out
