I think it's just gonna be hit and miss with avi files. Some work, some don't; I personally think it has something to do with converting them into avi files from other file types, but that's just my opinion based on the limited experience I've had with that problem. I spent a long time on google a while back trying to find a solution and none of them worked for me. Although you can try going to Tools -> Options and unchecking some of the codecs there, randomly, and some combination of checked and unchecked may solve it. Some people who have a lot installed say that helped them. But I only have the one AVI Decompresser codec in mine, and whether I had that one checked or not they didn't work for me. It's a real pain, and annoying that Microsoft hasn't found/released a fix for it yet (as far as I could find) but I haven't come across any issues with wmv files, so I just decided to convert all my avi files to something I know works and not worry about a problem no one has solved yet haha. Sorry, maybe you'll get lucky and someone a little smarter than me will come along and give you a better answer.
