Re: MS Word 2007 error on shut down

This won't work and I tried it. When i follow this procedure, I have 2 folders, one is called "Data" and the other is called "Old-Data" and so I cannot rename the folder that says "data" into "old-data" because that folder already exists. What do I do now?

First, background.

08-10-08 ordered a Dell Studio Laptop with Vista Home Premium 32.

08-24-08 Computer arrives. Everything but sound card in working order. Downloaded some corrected drivers. Fixed soundcard problem.

09-01-08 Installed registered version of MS Outlook 2007 and then installed registered version of MS Office 2007. Backed up Outlook .pst file from old laptop, restored .pst file to new laptop. I set the system up to download and automatically install Windows Updates each morning at 3am. Everything, including MS Word 2007 works normally for several days.

09-12-08 8am – I noticed a Windows Update had take place and had terminated normally. The update had automatically restarted the laptop (I leave my laptop on at night to perform register edits, security scans, and backups of important folders.)

09-12-08 930am – I double-clicked an MS Word file attached to an email. The file opened in MS Word. I started experiencing all the issues described in this thread. I worked around the problem for a couple of days. I did not associate the MS Word failure with the previous night’s Windows Update.

09-14-08 Finally had time to investigate the problem. Googled it, and was directed to several forums. As suggested in some of the forums, changed the default printer. Did not fix the problem. Eventually found the suggestion to use regedit to rename the Data and Options folders. (I’ve never had an Addins folder.) Restarted the computer. MS Word works flawlessly.

09-15-08 Laptop had been restated during the night. Noticed Windows Update had downloaded an installed updates overnight. Around 930 am I opened an MS Word document. Problem had reappeared. I checked Windows Updates. New updates were downloaded and installed EXCEPT MS Office SP1. Completed installation of Windows Update Office 2007 SP1. Restarted computer. DID NOT perform regedit repair. Opened and used MS Word doc. Problem repaired.

Conclusion: the problem is created by a Windows update (in my case the one on 09-12-08) - which is why it appears “all of the sudden.” The problem was repaired with the Office 2007 SP1. I’m interested to see if the problem re-appears with my next Windows update.

I’ve posted a scrolling .png image of the update history of the computer here:

By the way, I noticed that several members had tried the regedit repair and were concerned when they tried to rename the files more than once.

If you have to perform the repair more than once, simply delete the oldData, oldOptions, and oldAddins folders, then rename the Data, Options, and Addins folders again. Giving them new names makes them invisible to office. You can actually call them whatever you want, e.g., badData, archiveAddins, or backupOptions – it doesn’t make any difference.

Re: MS Word 2007 error on shut down

Delete the "old-files" first. They're invisible to MS Office. Then rename the Data, Options, and Addin files again. You can do this over an over again if you're experiencing the problem over and over again. Renaming them only forces MS Office to create them again, because it things they're not there.

Regards,

t.

Re: MS Word 2007 error on shut down

So I followed the steps to change Data to Old-Data and now somehow Vista has crested a NEW folder called Data and Word is back to giving me the same stupid error message! Does anyone know anything about this or has anyone had this problem?

Re: MS Word 2007 error on shut down

I am having this same problem with PowerPoint. I looked for a "data" folder, but there isn't one. Anyone have the register edit for PowerPoint? Thanks!!

Type winword /safe in run and hit enter. This will open word in safe mode, close it.

Is it hanging while closing?

I've been having the same issue. I opened Word in safe mode by running the command you provided. It did not hang on closing. In other words, it closed normally. Any suggestions. Thanks for the help.

Open word click on the orbit and select word options. In the option window select add in and click on go.

There you will find the add ins added to word. Disable one by one and check
