Vista Tutorial - How do I stop Windows Mail from being the default mail handler?

I have a laptop with Windows Vista. I used to use Windows Mail as my e-mail client, but I recently installed Office 2007 and am now using Outlook. I have gone to Default Programs, and Outlook is set as the default mail handler for all mail functions. But when I click on a mailto link from my browser, Windows Mail still launches. How can I change this?

In Internet Explorer, click on Tools, select Internet Options, goto the Programs tab and make sure that Outlook is set as the default mail program.

That should fix it, try it and let us know.

What if you don't USE IE? Say you hate IE and use Firefox? That didn't seem to work for me when I did it on firefox. Well I set Yahoo as my default, not outlook..........

I'm using Firefox, and that worked for me. I went to Tools - Options - Applications and changed the mailto program to Outlook. I changed it everywhere else, but I didn't realize there was a separate setting in Firefox.

I know this thread is a bit old....but I also keep getting the annoying message "Either there is no defaul mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the message request. Please run Microsoft Office Outlook and set it as the default mail client." The thing is I DO NOT WANT Outlook as my default mail program - I use something else on a day to day basis and just use Outlook 2007 for small business purposes. How can I stop this appearing all the time? thanks
