Cant open outlook 2007. Get msg, verify the switch you are using

Hi all,

I have vista business and office 2007. Outlook was working fine till a few days back, when I started getting the msg,

Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. The command line argument is not valid. Verify the switch you are using.

Uninstalled office 2007 and reloaded it. No use. Out look still not working

Downloaded and installed Outlook tools 2.1. Could not understand anything. Tried my hand at changing startup switches, which I dont understand in any case, but no use either. The same msg again and again.

All other office 2007 applications work fine

Pl Help!! Outlook had all my contact data and other details!!

Nandi

Re: Cant open outlook 2007. Get msg, verify the switch you are using

Did you have a previous version of Office installed? If so, try this:
1- Uninstall all office applications
2- Reboot the system
3- Install only Office 2007 - Even if you only have the upgrade.
3a-If asked about your previous version (if you have 2007 upgrade), swap out the 2007 disk with the old office disk and the 2007 install files will check your previous version.
4- Once the install files verifies your previous version, put the 2007 disc in and let it finish installing the rest of the files.
5- Activate Office, then download and install the service packs.
6- After the SP’s are installed, try Outlook.

This may or may not solve the problem, but at least you’ll start clean. If this doesn’t work, I suggest you call Microsoft’s Office Tech Support, unless someone here can provide a fix.

Also you should always backup you .pst file, especially before doing any outlook maintenance as this file contains all your outlook info such as contacts, personal folders, calendar appointments etc..,

In Vista, It can be found in your user profile under “AppData”, “Local”, “Microsoft”, “Outlook”

Since you already uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook, you may have over-written the file, thus loosing what you already had. You can check by looking at it and noting the size of the file. If its larger then 1meg, chances are all or some of your info is saved, if its smaller, then chances are you lost your info.

If on the other hand you have a backup, then you can import that one into your new outlook account once you get it up and running.

Good luck.

Re: Cant open outlook 2007. Get msg, verify the switch you are using

Hey Sygnus21,

Thanks for ur help. But what u told me to do didnt help. But guess what, I have been regularly saving my outlook data in pst files in an external drive, and so what I did was this:

I made two new user accounts in administrator profile.

I deleted my original profile all together including all user files.

Opened outlook in the new profile. Got the same msg, but guess what, it opened through the icon in the startup menu!!

Reloaded my contacts and calendar using the backup files.

Have it working now. But now I have to figure out why it is not opening when I go through the my programs list?? I think it is a virus problem. Have just changed my antivirus program to another from symantec which sucks!!

I also have some new problems when the cmptr boots up and it gives error about some DLL files missing so now I am trying to figure out how to sort out this new issue on the new profiles I have created.

By the way, I dont have an installation CD as this laptop came with Vista preloaded, so now I am trying to solve these other issues.

Thanks and lets hope this thing gets stable again

N

Re: Cant open outlook 2007. Get msg, verify the switch you are using

Glad to hear you have your backups and got Outlook running, sort off.

As to you OS, Sounds like some files got corrupted and you might have to reload windows. If it's a new laptop you can try calling it's tech support to see what can be done.

As far as Norton Anti-virus, I've always liked it till I was forced to move to Kaspersky Anti-Virus for it's 64bit support under Vista. It's nice and clean and doesn't slow your computer down. Good program.

Hope you get you OS problems sorted out.

Good luck.
