Vista - Where Do Saved Mail Attachments Go?

I have opened an attachment (word doc) from an e-mail, worked on it in Word (2007), and saved it. I then forward the e-mail and before sending it, open the attachment to check it, only to find that he changes I made are not there.

Where does Mail/Word save the copy of the attachment I saved?

Does Vista have temporary folders that it saves these files to similar to XP and, if so, where can I find these?

you wrote on the attached file and saved it so if you opened the file on word that means your file should be saved on the documents and settings in the computer or either to retried the process to save and when you saved the file please saw the location of the file and go to that location you find your old saved file and see the drafts in the e mail also .

Normally the saved Word documents go into the Temp files, but I've never had any luck retrieving them out of the Temp folder. However, if you worked on the document recently enough, it might still be in your MS Word recent documents list, and/or your Vista Start menu's Recent Items list.

You have to re-attach the attachment to the E-Mail. If you make any changes to an attachment then, even though you have saved the changes, you must re-attach the new version to the E-Mail as forwarding it merely forwards that E-Mail to someone else in the same version that it was in when you received it.

Thanks dwarf. So, any attachment I would have to save somewhere first, work on it, (or vice versa), and then reattach, correct?

It seems to me in XP and Outlook that you can simply open an attachment and save it, and it will save it in the temporary internet folders and still in the e-mail. Does Vista do anything similar and, if so, do you know where I can find the temporary internet folders?

The problem is that, at some point, you saved the attachment, but forgot to specify where to save it. You probably opened the attachment directly from Windows Mail; edited it; and saved it from MS Word without checking where it would be saved to. That's not obvious, because opening it in Word caused it to be saved to a Temp folder first and opened from there. It subsequently got saved back there, a place that can be difficult to find.

It's hard to train yourself to do this, but I recommend not opening it for editing directly from the mail program. Instead, save it, specifying a place that's logical to you to do so. Then, open it for editing from that location. When you are ready, attach that edited version to your reply E-mail. You will always have an edited copy in a location you know and prefer.

It is even better if you append a modifier (such as the edited date or "Rev B", for example) to the file name when saving it after editing. So "Document.doc" would become "Document--2009-07-18.doc", for example. That way, you will have the original version plus the edited one. Only working on the edited one keeps the original "original"!
