Yet another "*.doc is not a valid Win32 application" thread

Hi all,

My system is Vista Home Premium x64 SP1. Since about mid-March, I've had issues with opening Office files - every time I double-click an office file, I get a dialog box saying "[filename.doc] is not a valid Win32 application". At the time, I had Office 2003 and tried just about every possible solution I could find on the internet.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2003, uninstalled the updates that were automatically installed the week I started to have problems, manually updated the file associations for all Office files (I can open the files from inside Office, so this led me to believe it might have been a file association problem, but I was wrong), ran the system scan (sfc.exe), and disabled my firewall/antivirus.

Today I installed a new copy of Office 2007 Standard, which removed Office 2003 from my computer, and I still have the same problem. I created both .doc and .docx files in Word, and cannot open either one from Windows explorer. I get the same error "filename.docx is not a valid Win32 application". I also downloaded all the updates for Office 2007 and rebooted my PC, with no luck.

I think it may be a registry issue, but still have not been able to determine exactly the problem is.
